Everlasting Childhood.

Such a wonderful story! Korie is so spunky and a wonderful protagonist, her character development is some of the best mental transformations I've ever read. And, Veronica certainly throws in a few surprises every now and then herself, quite the 'ah ha' moments abound. This is my favorite story with a mental transformation. A lot of twists and turns, smiles abound for the reader. And the reader can ask themselves, if put in Korie's situation, what would they do?

You've GOT to be kidding me!

I guess I'm going to be the only one-star review here, but this thing is worthless.

1. Grammar / Typos
No exaggeration when I say it's probably the worst writing I've ever encountered in a book. Run-on sentences, bad grammar and typos make it unreadable. (Did anyone proof this before publication?) Verbatim example: "When you are practiced this, the object will be more likely to start moving."

2. It's a pamphlet, not a book
Yes, it's bound like a book, but with a total of 41 pages (with several blank ones at the end) and huge images that take up halves of pages, there's very little content.

So, rather than deal with the whole Amazon return process, I ate the $7 and just threw this "book" in the trash. Save yourself the $7 and just google free content on the Web.

About the Author

Frank Close is Professor of Physics at Oxford University and a Fellow of Exeter College. He was formerly the Head of the Theoretical Physics Division at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and Head of Communications and Public Education at CERN. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling Lucifer's Legacy (OUP, 2000), and was the winner of the Kelvin Medal of the Institute of Physics for his 'outstanding contributions to the public understanding of physics'. His other books include The Cosmic Onion (1983), The Particle Explosion (1987), End (1988), Too Hot to Handle (1991), and The Particle Odyssey (OUP, 2002). In 2013 Professor Close was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Communication of Science.

Missing formulas in Kindle version makes this book largely incomprehensible.

The book explains the basics well while glossing over most of the complexities which is fair enough for the context of the book. Not having the many formulas appear in the Kindle version is unacceptable however and makes wide sections incomprehensible.

Vanity Fair columnist Orth calls the world of celebrity a war zone of million-dollar monsters and million-dollar spin. She proves her thesis through a series of lacerating essays and interviews exposing personalities who'll "sacrifice everything including, sometimes, their lives, to be famous." Orth views the Laci Peterson saga as America's number one reality soap opera and examines the media's hysterical need to provide alternative scenarios about the case just to keep the story in the news. The author is witty, probing and painfully candid in her sympathetic piece about the violence Tina Turner suffered under Ike Turner's brutal control, but argues that Turner endured the beatings so long because of her own desire to be successful. Orth also uses icons Judy Garland, Madonna and Michael Jackson as examples of stars who portray themselves as victims to hold the limelight. The need for fame encompasses a "contact high," demonstrated by money manager Dana Giacchetto, who was convicted for defrauding his "less famous accountsâ€"the A-minus or B-plus listâ€"so as not to lose face with the A-plusers." Even more grisly is Orth's account of Andrew Cunahan, who shot Gianni Versace and then himself, hoping for worldwide attention and immortality. Orth dissects such diverse personalities as Margaret Thatcher, Woody Allen, Karl Lagerfeld and, poignantly, Dame Margot Fonteyn, who sadly reflects, "I have lived my life in what I call the empty hotel room." Orth's first book, Vulgar Favors (1999), offered a perceptive look at serial killer Andrew Cunanan and the society that nurtured him. Her follow-up provides an equally perceptive look at celebrities and the society that nurtures them. Collecting a number of her Vanity Fair essays (with new bridging material), the book takes us inside the worlds of such notables as singer Tina Turner, author Arianna Huffington, Sein Fein president Gerry Adam, and, again, murderer Cunanan. The book's variety reinforces the idea that celebrity has many meanings, and Orth's work--in-depth, broad ranging, free of sensationalism--reminds us that the celebrity profile doesn't have to be a fawning puff piece. One of the essays here reconnects nicely to today's headlines: a 1994 profile of Michael Jackson discussing the child-molestation charge that was pending against him then. Ultimately, though, this book doesn't need to rely on current events to make its mark. I am the only person who did not like this book?

I was greatly disappointed by this book. I expected it to be a serious study of fame and what people do to get it. Instead, it was a series of old Vanity Fair articles strung together in a book. Some people were interesting but most many were boring people that no one really wants to read about.
I hate that I paid $17.50 for it and hope my bad review does not drive down the resale value as I try to get rid of it.

Don't Be Fooled -- This a Collection of Vanity Fair Articles

She's a great writer, but if you read Vanity Fair, YOU HAVE READ THIS ALL BEFORE! The publisher should be ASHAMED of how they marketed this book, suggesting it is a comprehensive original piece of writing about a very interesting subject -- when in fact, it is a collection of Orth's previously written pieces. What a rip off.
I'm returning my copy because the book is not what it suggests it is. (And some of the articles profile poeple we SERIOUSLY no longer care about, or about whom so much has already been written (Michael Jackson, Laci Peterson) that the articles seem seriously dated.
She's married to Tim Russert whose own book just hit the new york times best seller list, so they will not be hurting for money. Take a pass on this book. Maureen, use your considerable talent and write a book instead of publishing a collection of tired pieces that ran elsewhere. (Does anyone REALLY care about Tina Turner some 10 YEARS after her book and the subsequent movie was released???) Orth is a compelling writer and I love reading her work in Vanity Fair. I expected more.....

this book is simply a re-hash of old Vanity Fair articles. She gets paid for those articles then slaps them together in a book for a second payday. What a lazy way to "write" a book?

Decent source of review questions

Several of my classmates and I got this book as an ABSITE review source. I think that it has a significant amount of material and covers many subjects well. There are some claims made by the author that I feel are still quite controversial. There were some errors as well, it seems like they were in a rush to get this out for the 2006 ABSITE. Overall, a decent source of questions/answers that covers a lot of ground. Somewhat time consuming. Some chapters much better than others.

Good source of questions for ABSITE or Boards

As a general surgery resident I purchased this book to assist in my ABSITE review. I think this book provides a comprehensive review of common testable surgery topics but some chapters are better than others. The chapters are constructed to cover a different topic via a Q&A format. Each chapter is written by different authors so there is not a repeated framework for each section. This means that some sections are long and tedious while others are well-written and the questions are constructed in a more ABSITE/boards format. There are some errors in the textbook as well. The reader answers a set of questions (number varies per chapter) and then the answers are given at the end with extensive explanation. I enjoyed the explanation and definitely felt this was valuable to my learning. This is not a book that you can pick up 2 weeks before the ABSITE for a quick review. It is time intensive and will require some dedicated study time to get through but definitely worth it. An updated edition would earn 5 stars from me.

I have only just started using this review but am quite impressed with it. This book was suggested to me by a resident I met as a 4th year while at an interview.

I feel that it covers most if not all of the important topics tested on the ABSITE, and has very detailed easy to read explanations. Note that this is purely a Q and A book.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. Another book you can try is the Rush review which I am told is also very good..
