Interesting but incomplete!

This very interesting book furnish the reader with many kinds of Tibetan charms and amulets and from diverse traditions, including some of the Tibetan Bon religion. All that in a clear and oversized format (book: 31 x 21 cm). Substantial information is also given to the reader about these diverse charms and amulets. But here is what i consider to be a very important and regrettable flaw: no one will be able to make the charms and talismans provided in that book!

Indeed, the author simply tells the readers that 1) there are six Buddhist tantric rites associated with the making of these charms (the rite to be chosen depends on the type of charms the person needs), and 2) that these six tantric rites are to be learned and performed according to the tradition of a transmission through a teacher and following precise rules such as the time of the rite, the astrological influences, the seed syllables and visualizations to be concentrated upon and so on. Thats all! So, consequently, for the readers without such "teacher" to inform them about these diverse rules, time, astrological influences, etc., (but who would nevertheless be very interested to make and consecrate their own charms and amulets), it means that here again, they will get a book that wont help them about that matter... Sadly, a very big lack! Indeed, personally i think that this book could have been a real and rare pearl (as it is already a very good work in its own right), but because of the above mentioned lack, i consider it to be regrettably ... incomplete. For that reason, two stars are subtracted from the possible total of five.

Excellent coaching techniques

I've read a few coaching books but none so detailed and organized as this one. The author has created a program that moves chapter to chapter, from beginning techniques to more advanced techniques. If followed in order, the potential coach with learn from start to finish how to begin a coaching session, what to say, how to organize the session correctly, how to communicate effectively with the client and motivate them to improve their lives. It also contains information on how to start your own coaching business. There are many valuable techniques to choose from as well. I was more than impressed with this book!

Inspiring and easy to use

This is my first review. I just had to tell you how this book has helped me in my personal life and also as a trainee life coach. The techniques are easy to follow and to implement into everyday life and what is really great, I can help my clients with techniques I have used on myself. The book is a pleasure to read, understand and interpret and also, it has been an invaluable learning tool and reference manual.

Curly Martin has captured the essence of life coaching in an inspiring and clear way. It knocks the socks off some of the theoretical tombs which pontificate about coaching but do not inspire people to become coaches. You immediately know when reading this book that Martin is a practicing life coach and she shares her knowledge and experiences freely. The best coaching book I have bought and I recommend this book to life coaches and people who want to help themselves to achieve results and to achieve their goals.

Had to buy this to go with a training. It was an easy read. Lots of practical advice. There was a lot of reliance on some techniques that are not supported by research, so I took it all with a grain of salt. Good advice on the business aspects of setting up a practice.

Fast and hard is the impression this left. The protagonists are tough and, in many ways, brutal, but still products of modern American society-slavery, molestation, murder are anathema. They feel real to this Iraq veteran, which is no small accomplishment. They will probably disturb naive readers, so be wary.
The plot is moderately twisty, though paced slowly enough to keep up.
The editing is poor. Proofreading is an issue, though it certainly went through a spelling checker. More problematic is layout and page organization; weeks are skipped in simple paragraph breaks, rather than typical section breaks. This made for many jarring transitions.

I'm not sure who to recommend this for. If you are a veteran and a gamer then it will probably be enjoyable. If you know a vet that games then you may find this insightful. For everyone else, this could be traumatic. Definitely use the free sample on this piece.

This was a great book. I loved how the Vets went about handling their leveling. It gave the book a sense of "realism" that many books of this genre don't have. There was also a good mix of grit and humor. The running joke with Derek was pretty funny. I really hope there will be a sequel.

Good role-playing, alternate world story

Good book, just short of great, but not by much.

This story is about a group of ex-army role players who are pulled into a world related to our own. A world that has been altered by by modern beliefs and role playing in our world. Altered so that the normal role-playing leveling systems apply to that world. These four friends soon find them selves drafted into a quest, that is beyond their ability and understanding. The story is about how they cope with both by growing in skill and understanding of this alternate world, while trying to find there way back to the comforts of home.

It certainly is a choice

Don't let the title fool you. Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency. Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other". Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery. Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well. I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship.

This book really is ground breaking

Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper. At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake. Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again. This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

Essential Reference for Every Engineer

I just recently passed the mechanical PE exam (fluids discipline), and I thought I would share the studying strategy that seemed to work for me. The very first thing you should do is purchase this book, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (MERM), even if you do not plan to take the PE for several years. This is an excellent book that is useful for any mechanical engineer to have. Plus, if you begin to use it now, it will only help to make you more comfortable with it for the exam.

Begin your study about 5-6 months before the exam. At this point you should also purchase the associated Practice Problems for the MERM. Each day, read a chapter and then try to work the practice problems from that chapter. This will take you about 1-2 hours per day. The key is to not burn yourself out, so begin early and only do a set amount per day. On some days when the chapter is short, or you have extra time you could read and work problems for an extra chapter or two. Also, I decided to skip the math and statistics chapters because I felt like I still remembered the basics and there are no general math questions on the exam. So if you feel the same way, you can eliminate 12-13 chapters right off the bat. At this pace, in about 3 months you will have read the entire book (around 1500 pages) and at least attempted every single practice problem. At this point you will be in full panic mode, because you won’t feel comfortable with any of the practice problems because as I said, they are much harder than what is on the exam. Relax! The practice problems for the MERM are infinitely more complicated than what you will encounter on the exam. So do not worry too much if you don’t exactly know how to do them. Just try to work each problem, if you get stuck just read through the solution and try to understand. Keep in mind that no one can work all the problems in that book, so you are no different. Just do your best. When you have finished the book, it should be right about the time that you have to choose your specific mechanical discipline for the exam. Since you have seen all the types of problems, you should be able to make an informed decision on which of the three that you are best at.

As a general rule of thumb for the exam, anything you can think of that will save you any time is worth it. The MERM is absolutely jam-packed with charts, tables, graphs, etc. As you are reading through and working problems, you will start to notice you refer to some of them fairly often. It’s a good idea to put a tab on the page where the useful information is located. By the time I took the exam, my MERM had tons of tabs.

When you have finished the MERM and its practice problems, purchase ALL THREE (fluids, mechanical systems, HVAC) sample problems and solution booklets from the NCEES. The first 40 questions are exactly the same in the three booklets, but the next 40 will be different. It’s still worth it to buy all three, because in the morning session of the exam, you could encounter any of these problems. Make yourself out a schedule where you work 10-15 problems per day. This time, you will need to actually be able to do the problems, unlike the MERM problems. These problems are designed to represent what is on the test, and also to be able to be completed in 6 minutes. You will start to feel a lot more comfortable at this point because the questions are much easier than what you’ve seen so far. Work all 160 questions over and over in groups of 10-15 per day until the day of the exam. By now you should be very comfortable, and ready to tackle whatever they throw at you.

Update in response to some questions: On test day, you will see people walk into the exam with dozens of books. Some even stand up all the books vertically on their table like a little library bookshelf. You will immediately wonder if you did not bring enough material. Rest assured! If you go into the test relying on this many books, then you are in trouble. There simply isn't enough time to think about which book to open and then search for the answer. I went into the exam with only the following materials and it was more than enough:

Tips to pass the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam

I passed the October 2015 Mechanical Engineering PE exam (I chose to take the Mechanical Systems and Materials in the afternoon), and I would like to share with you how I prepared for the exam. I did not enroll in a course, but I used the following four resources, all purchased on Amazon:
(1) Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 13th Ed
(2) PE Exam Review for Mechanical Systems and Materials: PE Review Book for ME
(3) PE Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Systems and Materials Practice Exam
(4) Six-Minute Solutions for Mechanical PE Exam Mechanical Systems and Materials Problems, 2nd Ed

The first of these four resources, of which this review concerns, is by far the most essential. I repeatedly used Lindeburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual during the actual test. While the other three resources were helpful, and I recommend that you purchase and use them, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual was by far the most helpful. Most of the chapters contain material that is "fair game" on the exam. You can compare what the exam covers versus the chapters in this book. You will notice that some chapters contain material that is no longer covered on the exam. I skipped these chapters. For the chapters that did contain material on the exam (which was a majority of the book), I read them completely, and I worked through all examples. Most example problems have solutions in both S.I. and U.S. systems, and this is helpful because the exam can use either system. I switched back and forth: if I solved one example problem using S.I., then I would solve the next using the U.S. system. Furthermore, to get extra studying time, I studied during my lunch break at work. I ate for about 15 minutes and studied for about 45 minutes. If you do this 5 days per week, then that is an extra 3.75 hours of study per week that you did not have to do at home. Plus, when you bring a really big book to work and read it, people will look and think you look really smart.

I will also review the other three resources listed in this review. In my opinion, the afternoon exam is orders of magnitude harder than the morning exam, so prepare for the afternoon exam even more than the morning exam. Best of luck, I wish you well!

Take this to the PE, along with a few others...

Great preparation guide and a great general reference. Spend time with it before the exam so you know where everything (generally) is, and tab out the book so you know how to get to places you need to use. A good rule of thumb that I used was, any time I took a practice exam and used the MERM for a lookup, I stickynoted that page, knowing that I needed to tab it later.

The book takes you back to first principles, and derives many of the equations you will need to find and use on the exam. It also rigorously uses constants of gravity in the USCS versions of equations. This may inspire you to needlessly divide a pound-force by a pound-mass just for the sake of clearing out units. However, this may be useful to you should gravity not be a constant in the particular problem you're working.

It treated me well as my last-ditch effort to get an equation I needed - and in fact it saved my butt at least a couple of times. However, getting those equations to work for me took some trial and error because they weren't in the final form I needed to use.

Cameron Hydraulic Data and the ASHRAE Pocket Guide may serve you better for equations that are ready to use right away. Cameron Hydraulic Data especially has a number of equations that you just insert your flowrate in GPM and your pipe size in inches, and out pops your velocity in FPM or your velocity head in feet. Shortcut equations, easy. Not a strong point of the MERM. I went into the test with Cameron, ASHRAE Pocket Guide, ASHRAE Handbook 4-pack, my favorite Thermodynamics textbook (Cengel & Boles 4e from college), Property Tables from Cengel and Boles, and about 20-30 pages of my own handwritten thermo, fluids and HVAC notes. That was enough, I don't think the MERM alone would have been.

About the Author
Bertram Gross (1912–1997) was a social scientist, federal bureaucrat, and professor of public policy and political science. During the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, he served as an advisor in the areas of public housing, wartime price controls, small business, and post-war planning. He was the major architect of the original full-employment bills of 1944 and 1945, and of the Employment Act of 1946. The Campaign to Abolish Poverty/Full Employment Coalition now presents the annual Bertram Gross Award in his honor. While working on legislation in Congress and the president’s office, he wrote The Legislative Struggle: A Study of Social Combat, which won the American Political Science Association’s Woodrow Wilson Prize. Gross contributed to a variety of publications, including the New York Times and Social Policy, where his first piece on Friendly Fascism appeared.

An amazing look af the future passed..

I discovered this book about 12 years ago in one of those old used/discontinued bookstores that don't exist anymore. They had two copies, and by the time I was done reading it, I wished I had bought both.

When reading this book, it is important to remember that it was published in 1980. The Cold War was moving toward détente - with the public's desire for peace finally overwhelming the Militarists' competing interests - for now. The US left was in heady times. "People Power" had ended the US involvement in Vietnam, and seemingly scored major advances in civil rights. Almost no one publicly defended racist and reactionary stances that only a decade earlier seemed to represent the sentiments of the majority. But the post-war economic slump was compounded by a recently resolved petrol embargo, and the general malaise and fatigue from too many disappointments combined with the overconfidence of recent advances to open the way to "Morning in America" and the Reagan Revolution, which is described in these pages before the old Second Banana to a Monkey was ever even nominated. At the time this book had to have been written, most Americans would have considered the likelihood of an extremist like Reagan getting elected to be almost zero.

The result of that massive electoral convulsion set in motion a series of attacks on personal liberty and advanced further than ever the primacy of capital, all in the context of one last push at advancing the Cold War to the brink of disaster - with the outcome known in advance only to a select few. (I can recall a high-ranking Reagan official on "Meet The Press" around 1983 discussing arms control negotiations in the context of the Soviet economy, flatly stating that their economic straits were so severe, that if something did not give within the next 5 years, there may not be a Soviet Union any longer. Somehow, the CIA missed that memo.)

Virtually every move made during this time is predicted in "Friendly Fascism" with motivations and rationale to support it. Further, long-term developments that also came to pass are also hinted at. About the only place where the book falls flat is its "alternative scenario" of a "Fortress America" as the lone refuge of Capitalism in an increasingly socialist world, still polarized by a Cold War split. You have to cut Gross some slack here, because unlike the CIA in 1986, he wrote that before the aforementioned 1983 "Meet the Press" episode.

Despite its dated subcontext, this book is useful as a map for the interests of power, and how they are applied within the facade of "democratic rule", and the methods used to allow fascism to exist in plain sight, while leaving it room for plausible deniability that depends on a combination of emotionally-driven denial, and common misperceptions of the true nature of fascism.

A classic that gets far too little credit or attention.

Prophetic Book Considers Effects Of Rise Of The Power Elite!

I lost my trusty old `dogged-eared' copy of this wonderful classic in a house fire a couple of years ago, and only recently found a used hardcover copy at the wonderful independent bookstore in Peterborough; The Toadstool Bookstore. Considering how relevant the book is to events transpiring in this country now, it was a fortuitous discovery. This is a relatively short but extremely cogent and well-argued treatise on the rise of a form of fascistic thought and social politics in late 20th century America. Author Bertram Gross' thesis is quite straightforward; the power elite that comprises the corporate, governmental and military superstructure of the country is increasingly inclined to employ every element in their formidable arsenal of `friendly persuasion' to win the hearts and minds of ordinary Americans through what Gross refers to as "friendly fascism".

For anyone familiar with modern social theory, it is apparent that the author's thesis is a quite clever and accurate extension of sociologist C. Wright Mills' well known notions of what came to be known as the `mass society' theory. This was an essential aspect of Mills' famous theory of the power elite as forwarded in a book with the same title. Like social theorist G. William Domhoff ("The Higher Circles"), Professor Gross shows how the deceptively friendly and engaging style of the powers that be actually constitute an increasingly dangerous threat to the democratic process and to the long-term survival of our precious civil liberties. Of course, for Americans used to the association between the term `fascism' and the image of angry totalitarian states such as Nazi Germany and the Italy of the same period of time, it is perhaps difficult to associate with the notion that clever and systematic manipulation of the general population through use of the mass media is a form of fascistic influence. Yet, as Gross argues so persuasively, that is exactly what it is.

The term that pops to mind is that process that M.I.T. scholar Noam Chomsky would refer to as "manufacturing consent", a dangerous propensity which dangerously influences the perceptions of individual citizens by continually immersing the populace in an electronic stream of messages, both blatant and subliminal, that serves to condition them to a particular way of experiencing, participating, and perceiving the world around them. We find ourselves constantly bombarded by powerful and suggestive images, message-laden icons which deliver consistent themes regarding the nature of the environment we are living in, one we come to employ more and more exclusively as our preferred method of interacting in both the civil and legal aspects of contemporary society.

As Professor Gross so prophetically forecasted, the mergers of all commercial news sources, both electronic and other, have come under the ownership and control of corporate America, one of the leading edges of the power elite. Amazingly, all of this also rings a responsive chord with the single most prophetic work of fiction in the 20th century, Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World". Lost in our petty diversions and self-absorbed in a pool of trivial pursuits, we become increasingly more vulnerable to the solid wall of subliminal and other messages all conveying a message regarding he nature of the world and our social, economic, and political place in it.

As our experience with the several successful Presidents ranging from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, the artful use of personal charisma to cover a mean-spirited political agenda has worked amazingly well. In the twenty years since the book was originally published, many aspects of our collective socioeconomic well-being have been profoundly changed, almost exclusively to the favor of the rich and well placed and to the increasing detriment of the average man and woman on the street. The statistics available are overwhelming in detailing the levels to which ordinary citizens have been stripped of most of the socioeconomic gains of the last century. In every area of contemporary life, from the cost and extent of health coverage to the responsibility for a variety of aspects such as providing for individual retirements, the vastly expanding future tax liability, and the use of the federal treasury to provide for subsidies to corporate America, the story is the same.

Increasingly we are being manipulated into surrendering our voice in the democratic process and to playing a more limited role as consumers, which the elite evidently sees as our only crucial civic responsibility. As George W. Bush said with a booming voice and a congenial charismatic smile, post 911 Americans just had to get out to do their patriotic duty by once again buying things, to get the economy going once more. Indeed, it is becoming a brave new world. This is a wonderful book, and one that is a great, thought-provoking read. Enjoy!
