Love the Meatmen series!

These sexy gay comix are some of the best in the business. There are some lame ones that don't do much for Mr Woody but most are entertaining and exciting. I have most of the Meatmen series.

Vol.25: The Slickest Collection Yet?

10 artists contribute to the raunchy proceedings this time, with more highlights than usual. "Teasy Meat" by Zack (the cover story) is about a porn director who'll stop at nothing to get what-and who-he wants. "Going Long.... ....Going Deep" by Farraday is a comedy about a football players. Farraday's writing continues to far out-distance his still-amateurish art, but the drawing's come a long way, as I see a lot of improvement with background details, anatomy and use of perspective. "Stagecoach" by John Blackburn sees his Voodoo Love-God Coley Cochran in Western gear to entertain guests at a theme park. As usual, this gets my vote as the HOTTEST story in the book, and surprisingly features a brief cameo by Quincey Quartermain, Coley's movie-producer / father-figure who to date has only appeared in the limited-edition graphic novel BREATHLESS (1991). "The Longshot" by Joe features his usual well-muscled studs enjoying a 3-way in between beers. "Newcomer" by Stepan Zubinski is a post-apocalytic sci-fi tale involving robots, mutants, gladiators and she-male geishas, all eager for sex and more sex, and features some of the most STUNNING artwork in the collection! "Camilli-Cat And The Djinns" by Patrick Fillion is heavy on sex while short on plot, while the art is very slicky-rendered, the most "mainstream"-looking in style that would fit in well on many current DC or Marvel comics. "Before Time & Space" by Jack Jacklin is a sci-fi-fantasy speculating on the origins of the universe; the line-rendering on the anatomy is a bit on the rough side, but otherwise the sense of design & storytelling is wonderful. And finally, Gerald Donelan contributes 18 more of his delightful cartoons; his work has been so consistently among the best parts of every MEATMEN volume I've bought that I'm fully expecting to see a collection, in the manner of Charles Addams or Gary Larson, one of these days!

The membership of the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care includes combat medics, corpsmen, and pararescuemen as well as physicians and physician assistants. PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Military Eighth Edition is the next step in the evolution of the premier global prehospital trauma education program, a partnership between PHTLS and TCCC that goes back to the fourth edition of this manual. Nother never-ending fight with NO point.

This story is well written but is lacking in sort of story line. I am not even sure what the story line is.
I have seen this more and more in Warhammer books. Nothing but fighting and killing with little resolution to the reason behind the fighting/killing. Its like they are trying to put out a NEVER-ENDING story -- because of $$$$?
All the bad guys escape and all the good guys are left standing around - acting as if they won some thing.
The good guys always seem to get suckered into some desperate battle by the bad guys - who are always more prepared and have better battle plans. Cant think of a single book in recent times where the Good Guys were on the Attack and setting up the Bad Guys in some elaborate Trap.

Better, but...

This is the third volume of the Legacy of Caliban and supposedly the conclusion of the trilogy. I liked this one better than the previous volumes although it still had some problems.

I had two main reasons for preferring it. One is that the characters are somewhat more believable, in particular that of Supreme Grand Master Azrael and his doubts and uncertainties, but also that of trooper Annael, while the most extreme and fanatical individuals – the Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai and Grand Master Belial – are somewhat toned down. The other is one rather superb “all-in” battle (both in space and on land – sort of - of which I will write no more to avoid spoilers

I still had some problems, however. One is that this is volume three of what is expected to be a trilogy but given the ending and with nothing really solved, I could not help wondering whether the author was going to drag it on for one or two more episodes. Essentially, and contrary to the book's commercial "blurb", this is NOT the "gripping conclusion to the Legacy of Caliban Series" and the story “looks and feels” far from finished.

Then I had a second problem. As another reviewer put it, “the Legacy of Caliban echoes down through the ages, and the secretive mission of the Dark Angels continues: to atone for the sins of their forefathers and capture all of the renegades and heretics known as the Fallen.” There is still no real explanation as to what these “sins” are exactly and why, some 10000 years later, there would be such a need to hunt down losers of this old and semi-legendary civil war. It is also unclear as to why this hunt must be so secretive that the truth – or what little is still known about the events that took place so long ago - is withheld from most of the Dark Angels themselves.

Finally, there is the character of Cypher, still so enigmatic and ambiguous, and about which you learn little, something that was also a bit of a disappointment.

Having mentioned all this, it would be unfair to state that the story does not progress: it does somewhat and you will, for instance, make the acquaintance of the Rock’s most famous prisoner. However, the pace is slow and all of the main points remain unexplained by the end of the book.

To end on a positive note, there was however some nice features included in this volume. One was the appearance of Successor Chapters to the Dark Angels and, in particular, the colourful Supreme Grand Master of one of them. Another one was the Chaos Fleet of the Death Guard, with Terminus Est and its veteran Horus Heresy First Captain Tryphon/Typhus.

Gav didn't stick the landing.

I love reading about the Horus Heresy, and the Dark Angels have always been my favorite chapter. I really enjoyed this trilogy all the way up until two thirds of the way through this, the final book. Nearing the end, the tone of the novel shifts and the writing becomes sloppy and rushed as if the author suddenly realized he would be well over word count if he resolved all of his many plots. The key reason for reading the series is to finally learn about the enigmatic character Cypher. This third book in the trilogy not only fails at answering the questions most followers of the Dark Angels have, it ends so abruptly and without explanation that it feels like a slap in the face to the reader. What could have been an amazing end to an otherwise excellently written trilogy ends up being nothing more than a major let down.

Wonderful retelling of an important piece of South African history.

Read this book as a follow-up to Stephen Taylor's "Caliban's Shore"; you will recognize some of the same characters. Both Taylor and Crampton are South African, which is invaluable when it comes time to describe the environment and history of the Wild Coast. This is Crampton's first book, and kudos to her for an honest retelling of the story of the young castaway. I like the free-flowing manner in which Crampton writes; its totally refreshing. Having spent time in Natal and the Transkei, I know the Wild Coast and Lambesi. A visit to the site of the wreck of the Grosvenor will have you picturing this young girl, alone in a strange land, excepting really quickly, that she must adjust to survive. Please buy this book. You wont regret it!

Speculation abounds and Fantasy dominates

The Pondoland coast of South Africa was a strange anomaly for many hundreds of years. Beginning in the 1500's, the sea lanes nearby were regularly traversed by Portuguese, Dutch, English, French [and others besides] ships travelling to and from India and the Far East. Yet the landscape itself was an almost complete unknown with Western knowledge confined to maps and observations of its coastline taken from the decks of passing ships. Of the people who dwelt there, even less was known.

Inevitably over the centuries ships got into navigational and technical difficulties and were wrecked on the Pondoland coast. Survivors, if any, had three choices. March north in the hope of reaching a Portuguese settlement in the area of today's Maputo. March south in the hope of reaching outlying Dutch farms at the Cape. Or assimilating with the local tribes people.

This book takes its cue from the 1782 wreck of a British East Indiaman named the Grosvenor. Of its 130-odd survivors, only a small handful returned home to Britain and India after a grueling coastal trek southwards to a Dutch farmstead outside modern-day Port Elizabeth. Most Grosvenor survivors perished of hunger, exposure and exhaustion on the way with small groups struggling on leaving behind comrades who could no longer continue. Of note is the fact that the Grosvenors included families travelling as passengers; none of whom returned home and which invariably led to speculation as to their individual fates. The Sunburnt Queen launches backwards in history prior to the Grosvenor wreck and constructs its narrative around an oral, Pondoland tradition that an English ship was wrecked some 20 to 30 years previously from whence came a young English girl [Bessie] who was assimilated into the local tribal community and who went on to found her own, racially-mixed sub-tribe. The arc becomes complete when, of course, the Grosvenors arrive and the speculative possibility is created that at least some of them found a measure of security within Bessie's community. It is noteworthy too that when Jacob van Reenen visited the area on two expeditions to search for Grosvenor survivors, he records the fact of meeting elderly European women living with extended families as Pondos.

If the fate of the Grosvenors is a matter of tenuous speculation [refer Percival R Kirby's "Wreck of the Grosvenor" and Stephen Taylor's "The Caliban Shore"] even when supported by first-hand testimony and copious official records, then The Sunburnt Queen is obliged to go right out into fantasy, wishful thinking and a heavy seasoning of modern-day political correctness in order to tell its tale simply because all that the author has to go on is some thinly attenuated oral history. Perhaps this is this book's greatest strength - and most dire weakness. It is an amazing feat of imagination but is too speculative to be a plausible history and too strongly set about with a need to "tell a factual story" to be a novel for this reader to like very much. It's a very strange hybrid indeed.

Good Points:
A must-have for anyone interested in Grosvenorology - like this reviewer.

Bad Points:
Too much wishful thinking, necessarily disjointed at times, and insipidly politically correct.

David is a Selenium Core Committer and has been using the product for over 3 1/2 years so knows all the nuances and issues that go with Selenium. I have not reviewed a single book on Amazon up until now, but feel compelled to do so for this book. After reading "JUnit in Action", "Head First Java", and "Professional Android Application Development" (all excellent), this book felt like it was written by people who had never read a book on programming or software, nor hired any editorial staff whatsoever.

Although they do cover many of the main topics of Selenium and it is an introduction to the testing framework, that's where its resemblance to a textbook ends. The language is unclear. Examples are poorly explained and contain errors. The general layout of the book is not intuitive. They do not go into any depth with each main concept at all. In sections of the book they restate the previously explained points or include duplication of code for the sake of lengthening the book - seriously. It's as if they were writing a secondary school paper that had to be 200 pages long and they just made it. It could have been 50 pages shorter.

Like the Selenium project, this book should be open source. I would rather have my money back, be able to read it online for free, and submit edits. Everyone would benefit. If you are new to programming, read up on Javascript and read all online Selenium documents before reading this book, otherwise it may be a waste of time - or worse, scare you away from using Selenium at all. If you already know Selenium pretty well and are a novice programmer, you'll get useful information from it, but be saddened by it's lack of quality. I wish there were something better. Maybe I should start writing.

The problem with this book is on Selenium 1, and it apparently came out just when Selenium 2 was coming out. Fortunately Selenium 2 seems to be pretty well backwardly compatible, so you can use what is presented in the book, but the bad news is that it contains only a tiny bit of Selenium 2 content, so it is already pretty dated. I think the publisher should have just waited a month or two and made it a Selenium 2 book.

Selenium 1.0 Test Tools: Beginners Guide

Selenium 1.0 Testing Tools: Beginners Guide is exactly that. It is a book that is aimed at those who are beginners with the technology (not necessarily beginners to testing or coding). Overall, David Burns has written a good book here. The conversational style is helpful; you feel like you are talking to a team-mate who is explaining the system to you in a friendly and engaging manner. The exercises selected are of a level that you are eased into working with the technology and the tools. The first five chapters are dedicated to the Selenium IDE, which for many testers is all they will ever see of Selenium, and for many testers who want to automate front end tests on Firefox, it may be all they ever need. If that's the case, the first five chapters will give you a lot of practical information and give you some solidly ninja levels skills to write tests and make them robust and solid. They will be limited to the Selenese format, but even with that limitation, there's a lot of cool things that a tester can do, from declaring and using variables, calling JavaScript events, and managing for examining objects and creating robust tests to help enhance testing.

The second half of the book deals with Selenium Remote Control (RC) and here is where some deviation takes place, at least for me. First off, I did not have the exact environment described in this book. I was close, but I had some set-up differences that caused some headaches. A number of the examples in the book just flat out would not work for me. Since my environment was different than that recommended (a Windows 7 machine on a 64-bit Athlon processor), I can't hold David responsible for my roadblocks. It does, however, show a critical issue with the Learn by Doing format of this book. If everything is the same, the format is terrific, and the first 6 chapters I was able to accomplish most of the project objectives and practice using the tools as listed. When I found myself stuck, there was little I could do to get around the issues. Be aware of that going in, your mileage may vary with the examples shown in the book.

Another frustration I had was specifically in Chapter 7, which dealt with writing your own scripts in Selenium RC. The chapter is structured around using the IntelliJ Idea Java IDE. In and of itself, this is not a bad practice, but when things start to not line up due to environments being different, adding an IDE into the mix can add even more complications and details to keep track of. While I appreciated the clean nature of integrating JUnit and the Selenium libraries under one roof, it added another layer that I personally felt might have been better handled by not including another tool. Agreed, CLI's are not sexy and they require repetition that the IDE doesn't, but I would have appreciated more specific examples and more complete examples. As it is, to get around the behaviors I was seeing, I generated tests in the IDE, saved the structure as a separate file, and then loaded that file to write my tests.

Again, these criticisms are actually pretty minor, and they are colored because my own environment had trouble with the examples (of which David states that 64 bit environments will have issues). Overall, this is a great first effort in describing the tools and the methods involved in loading, installing, and working with the Selenium stack. As the technology becomes more well known and solidifies, I'd like to see what David does with a future Selenium treatment. There's a lot of gold in here, and a few pieces of pyrite (and again, I have to take responsibility for my own panning), but all in all it fills a void for documentation for Selenium with a continuity that a beginner can appreciate and get productive with quickly.

What to look for, not what to do.

Before anyone gets defensive, I think Mike Holmes is one of the greatest living humans on Earth. I love his shows and magazine. I thought I'd love this book- but I was very disappointed.

I guess I expected more. If you are a hands-off homeowner (or future homeowner) who is buying a house or considering hiring a contrator to do a job on your house, this book is for you! This book will help you identify potential problems with your structure or with the people you intend to hire. Mike recommends certain materials and lets you know what to look out for.

Though, that's it. If you watch the show, you already know most of this. But I'm not the kind of guy who farms this stuff out. I do it myself- framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, whatever. I'm certainly not a professional and I'm sure I'm not "doing it (completely) right." I was hoping that this book would show me how to make it right. For example, I'm re-doing my bathroom. There's little to nothing about venting the drain pipes. Yeah, it says that if you have xyz problem, there's an issue with venting. But it doesn't tell you the proper way to vent anything- just to call a pro.

Sorry, Mike. Teach me how to do it, not how to pay someone to do it!

good overview of how to design and contractor selection - not DIY

I like Holmes TV shows, so i got this book. this is well written overview of the things to look for in contracting the remodel - i was more interested in the DIY details, but it's not Holmes fault that he wrote the book that he wanted to write rather than the one i wanted to read. Even though it's short on DIY details, it's still an interesting read.

sweet board book- touching while also bright and interesting for kids

This rather chunky board book (there are other editions) is very sweet!

Dora the hen is very proud of her first clutch of eggs. Then, as she visits friends in the barnyard, she wonders if her eggs are so special after all. All the other lively animal babies seem so special, versus her still round eggs. At the end of the book her eggs hatch into adorable chicks, and she feels her babies are the BEST.

The only goofy aspect of this book is that, of course, broody hens must stay "setting" on their eggs to keep them warm, with just a brief break each day. It might have been nice to incorporate that into the story, but since this book is for toddlers, few people will care. :)

A nice book which teaches that animals have feelings, too. Adorable illustrations parents and children will enjoy.

Definitely Recommend!

Very Cute book! We already owned the book called "Dora's Chicks". So when I seen there was a Dora's Eggs I had to purchase it. My 3 year old daughter has me read both books at least once a day! She loves the repetition in both books. After only 4 or 5 reads she can actually read them herself. Awesome Read.

Sweet Story

My daughter loved this sweet story when she was a preschooler. I just bought a copy for my niece's baby shower, and when my now-11-year-old saw it she got all nostalgic.

The storyline lends itself well to those mothers that have struggled with infertility.
