Add black and white vintage illustrations and you have a powerful yet easily accessed health history reference.

I purchased this book for a class I was taking and then I was going to turn around and sell it, but It's a great read! Not to sound too morbid, but the Information and history of how diseases have affected the course of history and how they continue to shape our world is just amazing.

A whirlwind tour of epidemics, too superficial to be useful

This survey of every epidemic and pandemic known to mankind since the dawn of written records is an epic unto itself. Starting with the Athens epidemic in 430 BC, the author takes us on a step-by-step voyage through everything from the endemic malaria of ancient Rome to modern "mad cow" disease. The chapters are divided into seven subsections: When and Where (basic facts), Significance, Background, How it Was Understood at the Time, Responses, Unresolved Historical Issues, and Suggestions for Additional Reading. Given how exciting mass exterminations of human beings are, this book should have made for some great reading.

Unfortunately, the author of this book bit off more than he could chew. Each brief chapter is a whirlwind tour of a disease shoved into a historical description that is too general to be enlightening. Moreover, because Hays is a historian rather than a medical researcher, the truly fascinating details of the diseases themselves are lacking. To make matters worse, Hays writes in a high school textbook style that is completely devoid of meaningful interpretation, theoretical framework, or even a sense of genuine interest. As a consequence, Epidemics and Pandemics literally put me to sleep. (And I thought nobody could make the Black Death seem dull.)

Most good books written about epidemics are written by epidemiologists, but, believe it or not, some of the best books on this topic are fiction. The Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis, is science fiction, but it is the best description of the Black Death I have ever read. If you want to really understand the impact of an epidemic, read historical fiction.

Incredible reference!

I have already read through half of this book and would like to greatly compliment the authors of the book for a job well done. If you are looking to TRULY understand the 802.11 protocol, this book is a must read. Furthermore, with 802.11n, as an industry, we are still very early in our implementation of all of what 802.11n can offer. This book talks about the features that are available and implemented now and also what will likely be introduced by equipment vendors in the coming years.

In addition to 802.11n, there have been many recent amendments to the 802.11 protocol such as 802.11r, 802.11k, 802.11w and more. Many changes are still coming to equipment vendor implementation and this book includes all of the important ones.

There is a great section on spectrum analysis as well.

As a Wireless LAN professional, you NEED to have this book on your bookshelf as a reference - period.

This book is a mile wide and a mile deep. It provides great insight into the interworkings of the 802.11 protocol including the latest standards such as 802.11n. One great aspect is the invaluable insight given into the complex 802.11 operations to make them simple to understand. Overall, this book does a great job taking the 1200 page 802.11 standard and distilling it into a useful palletable reference and concept guide. Good book, read the CWNA first before this one

This is a great book that goes into 802.11 frame formats, protocol analysis and spectrum analysis in good detail. I'd recommend reading the CWNA book first before tackling this one. This book is especially useful if you're looking at wi-fi troubleshooting in enterprise networks. If you work for a wi-fi vendor, distributor, reseller or are a customer who has deployed a large wi-fi network, I'd recommend reading this book to get insights into troubleshooting.

Up From Liberalism

I'm a college student studying on a liberal college campus who will probably pursue a career in Constitutional law. Reading this book has helped me understand my political philosophy much more clearly. Up From Liberalism by William F. Buckley, Jr. is a witty, sagacious, and very perceptive book declaring the fresh conservative alternative to liberal establishment politics. It is a must read for anyone really serious about being a political conservative. Although most of Buckley's comments are referring to past political history in the 40's and 50's, it helps one understand the ideological battle that has been raging for years in the political spectrum. Sparkling with humour and intellectual fun, Buckley quickly dispatches of his opponents' ideas with the ease of a master swordsman. This book is still valuable to read because the philosophy of liberals today hasn't really changed. To them, Government is still the answer to all of our problems. If you are a liberal, reading this book will help you understand the arguments against your position. If you are a conservative, this book will give you enjoyment, but also valid logical proof of why one should believe in limited government. I hope that everyone even slightly interested in politics reads this book.

One of the 25 most important conservative books

Those who came of age politically in the 1980s or later can hardly comprehend the influence Bill Buckley had on the modern conservative movement.
        He was, by far, the most attractive and thrilling conservative intellect for decades, and more than equal in debate to any liberal intellectual, as we learned on many occasions. Conservative students of my generation, confronted with an overwhelming liberal (and often unbearably smug) faculty, were greatly reassured by the knowledge that Buckley could smash the arguements of anyone on the liberal side.
        Though Up From Liberalism concerns itself largely with issues that date back to the sixties, the combination of humor and erudition Buckley uses to skewer the liberal establishment gives the book a timeless appeal.

Historic

Learn to think; stop regurgitating.

I am quite fond of this book, although Buckley has written and continues to write words of great elucidation. This one has been most formative for me. It is dated in its references, but the thought process and basis for reasoning is tried and true. Highly recommended for young people; especially those who consider themselves to be in one place or another politically, but are not entirely sure of the logic behind their beliefs, and would like to begin the journey of becoming a homo sapien.

The history of museum interiors, she argues, should be appreciated as a revealing chapter in the broader history of experience.

Her goal is "a cure for some, improvement for all." She criticizes the inertia she has observed in medicine that causes many primary care providers to postpone referring patients with cerebral palsy (CP) for treatment until symptoms become "bad enough" to warrant attention. Early intervention, she argues, produces far better results. She criticizes the same inertia for resisting challenges to the disproved yet still common belief that in many cases, rehabilitation is impossible and the best possible outcome is the child's condition failing to worsen. About the Author

Karen Pape, MD, FRCPC, is a neonatologist and clinical neuroscientist. As a medical innovator, she is challenging the system to raise expectations for babies born with early brain and nerve injury. She was a neonatologist and director of the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic at Toronto’s renowned Hospital for Sick Children, with an additional research fellowship in Neonatal Pathology and Ultrasound Brain Scans in London, England. She co-authored a book on baby brain pathology and was instrumental in the development of neonatal ultrasound brain scanning, now used in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Pape then directed work at the Magee Clinic in Toronto, developing a new, personalized approach to children and adults with early onset brain or nerve damage. She has lectured widely and conducted over 200 training workshops and conferences for parents, therapists, and physicians throughout North America and internationally in 12 countries. Dr. Pape lives in Toronto, Canada.

LIfe altering in so many positive ways

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this and I read from cover to cover without putting it down while our son was receiving therapy at a great centre who practice what Dr Pape has learned. What Dr Pape does for families of CP kids and adults is to think outside the square and show us that what we have options. The changes we have put in for our son are getting real results and we have been lucky enough to experience many changes in him and some within a day and we will continue to work on him to get him the best recovery. "Habit hides recovery" is a key concept and I would urge any parent of a CP kid to take this book and look for therapists that are willing to work with that in mind. Dr Pape is truly an revolutionary for not accepting the norm and looking at options. The day I stumbled onto a Ted talk of her's last year was truly the most life altering event for our 9 year old son, I cannot recommend this book and Dr Pape's work highly enough.

A must read! I could not put this book down. Dr. Pape takes a refreshing yet very informative approach to explaining neuroplasticity, and how the brain CAN recover from traumatic brain injury. She shares many powerful stories from her real world experience as a leading neonatologist and neuroscientist, and gives tremendous insight as to what can be done to assist the brain with healing. Dr. Pape also has a positively unique take on hope; something that is not frequently seen or offered in the arena. I highly recommend all special needs parents, physical therapists, occupational therapists, neonatologists, neurologists, teachers, EA's, and pediatritians to read this book. Thank you Dr. Pape for this incredible page turner!

Was hoping for more information on the element of emotions

Found Dr. Libby Weaver through the 2016 Hay House Summit and listened to her podcast on this book, "Accidentally Overweight." I was intrigued -- interested in how our emotions create excess weight. Most of the book's elements center around the liver, diet, effects of stress, and hormones, with the last element being emotions. I was really hoping for more information on how emotions effect weight, but didn't really find the answer here. I turned to YouTube and watched a video by Teal Swan on why we are overweight, and that was more helpful.

That being said, Dr. Weaver is very good at explaining how the body works and is effected by what we put in our mouths and how we live our lives. This book will help 'most'. I also recommend (for diet) reading "Diet Evolution" by Dr. Steven R. Gundry. I have followed his plan for 5 years and my bloodwork is great; but, there's more to weight than just diet and exercise: specifically [for me] why I have a "need" for fat. Slowly, I'm finding the answers. Dr. Weaver was a fair start.

I thought this was a great book! Having read quite a few "self-help" type books particularly on weight loss, this one is by far the best. It is intelligent, useful, kind, helpful, and interesting. I actually wish I'd read it way before my mid 50s. It would have been quite helpful in my PMS years. LOVED it!!

About the Author

Allen Cadwallader is Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He is the editor of Essays from the Fourth International Schenker Symposium, Volume 1 (2008) and Trends in Schenkerian Research (1990). His articles have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Intégral, Theory and Practice, and Journal of Music Theory.

David Gagné is Associate Professor of Music Theory at Queens College, City University of New York. He is the coeditor of Structure and Meaning in Tonal Music: Festschrift in Honor of Carl Schachter (2006). His articles and reviews have appeared in journals and books including The Music Forum, Music Theory Spectrum, Indiana Theory Review, Intégral, Schenker Studies 2, and Trends in Schenkerian Research.

Schenkerian analysis text strong on presentation, conten

This text is intended for graduate students in music (and perhaps for advanced undergraduates as well). It replaces Allen Forte and Steven Gilbert's Schenker text of ca. 1979 as an authoritative introduction to the themes and tools of Schenker's way of looking at the music of the Western Classical tradition. Long considered a "secret code" impenetrable to outsiders, Schenkerian analysis has at last been accepted as defining the mainstream of music theory in this country, thanks to the widespread availability since the '80s of English translations of his most important books, _Harmonielehre_, _Kontrapunkte_, the _Five Graphic Analyses_, and Schenker's late summary of his techniques and theories, _Der Freie Satz_. Cadwallader and Gagne succeed where Forte and Gilbert failed to find a clear, uncluttered style of presentation and a tone that is suited to the level of preparation one is likely to find among the target student population. A good test of this boo! k's success is that it is _almost_ usable by students with little or no prior specialized background; it succeeds to a remarkable degree in making Schenkerian theory a tool for musicians at large, rather than for specialists. A glossary of specialized terms would have been useful, as well as more extensive treatment of certain topics such as mixture about which Schenker had quite idiosyncratic ideas, but all in all this is a teacher-friendly, student-friendly contribution to the study of music theory which should be known to everyone in the discipline.

Best introduction to Schenkarian Analysis

I agree whole hearted with Perry's review, but give this book 5 Stars as it really is the best introduction to this subject. The book is clear and well laid out but it could benefit with more details on larger forms and completed analyses. That being said you should be able to tackle Schenker's books and analyse, and get into Salzer's Structrual Hearing and Forte's work after completing this book.

I honest felt I had a better understanding of music form and structure after using this book, and this of course is the point of Schenkarian Analysis, it's not just a thoery, it is supposed to be useful in understanding musical form and structure; which is easily forgotten with other books on the subject.

Good content but very poorly organized :-(

This is a widely used text and the authors certainly are recognized authorities in the field. The overall content is broad and appropriate, however, the text is very disorganized and poorly written. There is no sense of coherent progression of concepts and the authors frequently include extraneous information which is distracting. The approach attempts to break down the various aspects of Schenkerian Analysis by separately discussing bass lines, melodic structures, formal design, etc. but it is very unclear as to the relationships of the various aspects and is inconsistent in it's own use of the analytical language. The sequencing of the text makes it difficult to glean a holistic understanding of the method. In a graduate course I took recently, the professor spent large portions of class just answering questions about places we were confused by the text. A lot of students just took lecture notes and stopped reading the text all together.
