About the Author
Prof. Mooli Lahad, PhD, is a senior medical and education psychologist, professor of psychology, and director of the MA studies in Dramatherapy at Tel Hai College, Israel. He is also the founder and president of the Community Stress Prevention Center (CSPC). Prof. Lahad is one of the world's leading experts on community and public behavior, and coping with disasters. He has served as a consultant to the Israeli National Security Council and the Ministries of Education, Welfare, Homefront, Defense and Health. Following the 9/11 World Trade Center attack he trained community workers, first responders, mental health staff and medical care teams in New York and New Jersey. He served for many years as a consultant to UNICEF and is a former member of the NATO committee on psychosocial preparedness to disasters. He developed the “BASIC Ph” integrative model of resiliency. Dr. Miri Shacham, PhD, is a senior educational counselor, lecturer and researcher of psychology and education at Ort Braude College, Israel. She is also a psychotrauma researcher at CSPC. Dr. Shacham served for many years as a trainer and consultant to school managers in the Ministry of Education advising on preparedness and coping with terror and war situations. She also developed school programs enhancing teacher and pupil coping resources for trauma after the Second Lebanon War. Dr. Ofra Ayalon, PhD, is a psychologist and family therapist and an expert on working with trauma. She is a renowned author and trainer throughout the world in the field of trauma and coping with crisis and disasters. She retired from Haifa University after 35 years of teaching and research and she is currently the director of the Nord COPE Center in Tivon, Israel. Her career as a trainer and consultant has spanned many organizations, such as UNICEF in Former Yugoslavia, Finland's Red Cross, Center for Crisis Management and Education in the UK among others.

About the Author
Greg Everett is the head coach of the USA Weightlifting National Champions Catalyst Athletics weightlifting team. He remains a competitive lifter at the senior national level with a top placement of fifth in the National Championships, and is the 2015 Masters National Champion and masters American record holder in the clean & jerk in the 105kg 35-39-year-old category. Everett is the primary content creator for Catalyst Athletics, known internationally as one of the top sources for weightlifting educational material and weightlifting training programs, and publisher of multiple books on weightlifting. Catalyst Athletics also offers coaching certification based on Everett’s methods and curriculum, and has been providing weightlifting seminars around the world for almost ten years. He has authored multiple popular books; Olympic Weightlifting: A Complete Guide for Athletes & Coaches has been the most popular book on weightlifting available since shortly after its original release in 2008. He owns the Catalyst Athletics gym in Sunnyvale, California, where he coaches his competitive weightlifting team, and which also provides training for recreational weightlifters and athletes of other sports, and has published the monthly journal, The Performance Menu, for over ten years. In 2013, Everett released the first feature-length documentary film on the sport of weightlifting in the US, American Weightlifting, which he wrote, directed, produced, shot and edited on his own with no outside funding.

Major Upgrade From Previous Edition (A MUST Have For Coaches and Athletes)

This edition is a complete overhaul from the previous edition (2nd Edition, which I also have). There has been extensive content added to this edition and the design is MUCH better. The paperback version comes in at 588 pages and is now the "definitive textbook" for Olympic lifting for all athletes and coaches.

The lift progressions, program design, and supplemental information in this book is beyond description - it's simply outstanding and extremely detailed. I was already a huge fan of the 2nd edition, however, the 3rd edition is major upgrade and I love the overall design and flow of this book. You won't find the details of the O-lift progressions anywhere else. The Catalyst methodology is a wonderful system for learning and progressing with the Olympic lifts and the system is completely hashed out and explained in great detail in the book.

This is not a book to read, it's a book to apply. What I mean is that this is a book that belongs in the gyms for continuous reference and application to the sport of Olympic lifting. If you read only one book on OL, this could be the only book you'd ever need.

Greg Everett has consistently put out some of the best content and perspective on Olympic lifting and this book is a complete and comprehensive culmination of his work. With the growth of OL, this body of work is for everyone who's serious about their own training or becoming better as a OL coach.

I've been reading Greg's work for years now and this book is his best (and most comprehensive) work to date. The technique descriptions and progressions are easily worth the investment alone, but the book goes much deeper into all aspects of weightlifting. There is no stone left unturned and I can't imagine what further questions would be left unanswered after reading.

Wondering if you should get this book if you already have the previous edition?
The answer is absolutely YES!

I've already mentioned the reasons why: the book is a total re-design, a major upgrade, and a complete evolution to the previous edition. Things change, techniques improve, and new things are discovered. This book represents a much improved and enhanced version of "Olympic Weightlifting."

There's a reason the book is titled "A Complete Guide" because that's exactly what it is.

Kindle version is very good and user friendly

The Kindle version is fantastic. The table of contents is thorough so clicking on the topic you wish to read about takes you right to the page. The Kindle version is formatted neatly and the pictures are clear. I normally do not like buying books of this nature on Kindle, but I gave it a shot since I didn't want to lug around the huge book. I am happy I went this route and have already referenced it a lot.

Can you ask for more?

A must read if you want to improve your Olympic lifts in an exponential manner. Great resource for any crossfit participant. Now I understand more clearly the concepts my coach is trying to teach our class. The author has a website with instructional videos and articles covering a wide variety of topics for competitive lifters and he is on Facebook as well under Catalyst Athletics. His female lifting team just won the national championship so he definitely knows how to convey his knowledge and inspire his students. The book is quite large, about two and a half inches thick, and approximately six hundred pages, with a ton of photographs demonstrating proper form. Now I plan to to outfit my own home gym. My first purchase will be a good barbell and quality bumper plates. This book will reside right beside them. My thanks to the author for his inspirational work.

About the Author
Alain Vanderpoorten is a Research Associate of the Belgian Funds for Scientific Research at the University of Liège, Belgium, where he teaches molecular systematics, biogeography, and landscape ecology. His research presently focuses on the evolution of endemism.

Bernard Goffinet is an Associate Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. His current research spans chloroplast genome evolution in liverworts, the phylogenetic history of mosses, and the systematics of lichen-forming fungi. He teaches bryophyte and lichen biology and green plant evolution.

Good, not great.

This is an attempt to make contemporary aspects of the science of bryology easier to swallow than the more serious work by Goffinet and Shaw, called "Bryophyte Bryology." It would be better to either get a general text, like the excellent text book by W.B. Schofield, "Introduction to Bryology" or else get ready to sink your teeth into "Bryophyte Bryology" (second edition) from Cambridge University press.

About the Author
Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia, Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan, A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and Enlightenment: The Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in Göttingen, Tübingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977–ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250—1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993), and John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between 1996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. In 2003, Professor Turner was appointed Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

About the Author
Joan Saslow is the author of a number of textbook series for adults and young adults, including "Ready to Go," "Workplace Plus," and "Literacy Plus," She was also the Series Director of "True Colors: An EFL Course for Real Communication," and of "True Voices," an EFL video course. Ms. Saslow's special interest is in distinguishing the needs of the EFL and ESL learner and creating materials appropriate for each. Ms. Saslow has taught in Chile and the United States in a variety of programs, including binational centers, academic programs, intensive language programs, and workplace programs. Ms. Saslow has been an editor, a teacher-trainer, a language learner, and a frequent speaker at gatherings of English teachers throughout the world. Allen Ascher, formerly Director of the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, author, and publisher. He has taught in language and teacher-training programs in both China and the United States. Mr. Ascher has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. Mr. Ascher is author of "Think About Editing: A Grammar Editing Guide for ESL Writers," As a publisher, he played a key role in the creation of some of the most widely used materials for adults. Biographer Larry Tye can't help but be entertained by his subject's professional antics. Edward L. Bernays (1892-1995), a pioneering practitioner of public relations, zestfully ballyhooed his clients, utilizing a shrewd blend of publicity stunts, careful cultivation of the press, and solicited endorsements from "experts." Yet journalist Tye is also aware of the moral ambiguities inherent in the career of a man who vigorously promoted cigarette smoking and whose work for the United Fruit Company played at least some role in the 1954 military overthrow of Guatemala's democratically elected government. Dubbed the "Prince of Puff" and the "Baron of Ballyhoo," Edward L. Bernays, who died in 1995 at the age of 103, was arguably the most influential publicist of the 20th century. The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Bernays brought an astute grasp of human behavior to the nascent field of public relations, opening his own PR firm in 1919 and launching celebrated publicity campaigns for American Tobacco, Ivory Soap, United Fruit, book publishers, manufacturers of eggs and bacon and the platforms of presidents from Coolidge to Eisenhower. In this comprehensive biography, Tye, a Boston Globe reporter, attributes Bernay's success to a marketing philosophy that he terms "Big Think," which combined high-concept publicity stunts, endorsements from doctors, national surveys and other forms of publicity whose actual product endorsement was cleverly veiled. To promote Lucky Strike cigarettes among women in an age in which smoking in public was still outre, for example, he arranged for a parade of smoking debutantes to march down Fifth Avenue. To market Ivory soap, he created a hugely popular national soap-sculpting contest. A domineering and self-absorbed man who never missed a chance to promote himself ("in an era of mass communication," he often remarked, "modesty is a private virtue and a public fault"), Bernays eventually became a pariah in the industry that he helped to create. At times, Tye too blithely credits Bernays for shaping events and product success, rather than seeing his work as only one part of the welter of mass media manipulations that have long since transformed American life. But Tye succeeds in piercing the rapidly spinning mythology that perpetually surrounded the man who, he convincingly argues, pioneered the modern science of spin.

The hyperbolic modern world of mass culture, constant polling, and spin cycles got its start in the 1920s with the exploits of Edward Bernays, the "father of public relations." So claims Boston Globe journalist Tye, whose entertaining study combines a healthy jadedness about media manipulation with a fondness for his pioneer subject. Armed with a few of his uncle Sigmund Freud's insights, Bernays stoked the fires of the mass id, "crystallizing public opinion" for 435 clients ranging from Enrico Caruso to General Electric, Calvin Coolidge to Ivory Soap. To encourage women to smoke publicly, he sent a parade of them puffing down Fifth Avenue on Easter 1929. He popularized the "expert" survey, staged news events, planted stories, and created charitable-sounding business commissions. For the United Fruit Company in the 1950s he even helped topple the leftist government of Guatemala. Tye's book ably follows Bernays's ever-widening stunts, from his World War I enlistment work through the transforming decades to his death in 1995. Thinking vs. swallowing

Tye is accused of not offering a definitive judgment of Bernays because he offers too much "one the one hand" and "other hand" descriptions. Others feel the story should have been more chronological. I think these criticisms reflect the readers' problems rather than Tye's. I am interested in coming to my own conclusions, and Tye's descriptions and topical arrangements help me do that. I do not want to merely swallow a biographer's perspective without also considering other material about the person and the topic in general -- books such as Ewen's and other material. This is a fascinating story told well and offers a useful focus on one aspect of a much larger issue, which is how we are constructed as consumers and voters in late 20th century America.

What every PR person should know....

Tye's book is a must-read for any self-respecting PR wizard. How Bernays was able to engineer PR strategies for such diverse products as books and bananas, from Mack trucks to Lucky Strikes and even foreign countries, is ingenious and artful. His creativity hath no bounds. He elevated the practice to a social science, and build roads for the profession. He drafted a historical argument, outlining 5 stages of PR history in America, the last stage being the most interesting to me. This was the "Period of Mutual Understanding," quote: "a time when PR came to mean 'not a one-way street for giving information to the public for our clients but rather one of interpreting the public to the client as a basis for their action and, after the action had been carried out, interpreting the client to the public.'" If only all of us could be so articulate with our clients! Entertaining accounts on how he performed the craft (i.e., selling books by selling builders on the inclusion of book shelves in new homes)and his allegiance to "Big Think," were my favorate parts and I could not hear enough about them. The book explores the complex, contradictory nature he possessed and a surprise revelation in the end (and at the end of Bernay's life), will have you spellbound in disbelief.
