Overall a good story, but too short

Overall, Deefur Dog is a well-written story. The characters are believable, and the story is compelling. However, I read it in about an hour. I wanted something more. I wanted the tension to build more. The tension is there, but it seems rushed. I wanted to spend more time learning about the characters, and the author did not deliver that. Like I said, overall it is a well-written piece, I just wish the author would have developed more.

Cute but short

I read this in another format before it was published by Silver Publishing and while it is a cute story, I wanted more romance between the two main characters. I found the romance aspect to be lacking and the story too short to develop their interactions. The dog was adorable, though. So unless you love kid!fic and cute dogs, I'd skip this book and go for one of this author's longer stories.

Loved, loved, loved this. Great, slow building love story between Cameron and his nanny, Jason. My only niggle would be that I wanted more of the two guys together!

This one is going on my favorites shelf. :)

About the Author

Belva C. Collins, Ed.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky, where she serves on the program faculty in the Moderate and Severe Disabilities Program. Dr. Collins began her career as a teacher of students with intellectual disabilities in rural Southwestern Virginia before coming to the University of Kentucky to work as a research assistant on several federally funded grants to validate the use of response prompting strategies in special education. She has continued this line of research throughout her career in higher education and has been successful in guiding the applied research of her students in investigating variations of systematic instruction in classroom and community settings. This work provides the foundation for this text. In addition to disseminating her own scholarly writing, Dr. Collins serves as the executive editor of Rural Special Education Quarterly, the primary publication of the American Council on Rural Special Education.

Jim J. Zhao, P.E., is Chief Bridge Engineer with Nolan Associates, Inc., where he is in charge of bridge design and overall project management. A useful reference for bridge engineers

This book is a textbook on bridge engineering suitable for engineering students, bridge engineers in the early phase of their careers who need to develop their knowledge base, and more experienced bridge engineers seeking a handy reference. Some key strengths of the book are:

- Updating to the LRFD code. Given how massive the LRFD code is, this book serves as a less overwhelming gateway to the code (but certainly not a subsitute for it).

- The scope goes beyond design of new bridges, to also cover inspection, maintenance, remedial design, and other practical topics, in at least enough depth to meaningfully introduce these topics.

- The writing style, and use of interesting sidebars, makes the book relatively inviting, almost fun to read.

It is a nice book

About half of the book focuses on the bridge superstructure. The chapter on management at the back of the book is not very long. There are a bunch of design examples throughout the chapters of the book that you should study real closely.

I ended up learning some more about post tensioning, pre stressing, wingwalls and some other topics inside this book, considering that I didn't take a bridge engineering course in my undergraduate (I wish I did).

If you have a chance to take a bridge engineering course, seize the moment. Considering the long bridges that are being built in countries overseas, it would be handy to know what you would be up against if you want to work on a bridge project or design a bridge one day.

I recommend this book, and I suggest borrowing it from someone you know or check it out from a library before you decide to buy the book. It is worth reading.

I am one year into my first job as a bridge inspector/designer. I bought this book to get a more knowledge about the bridge industry and I have to say so far this book is great. I am learning great vocabulary, history about the industry and common problems that arise when inspecting and designing a bridge. I bought the kindle version and I am 21% in. As a result of buying a kindle version, there are some minor shortcomings like the links that you click on a page; there are no return links. If you select a link that jumps 100 pages ahead, and you don't remember where you left off you're screwed. But anyhow, it is great!

Driving Phobia GONE!

My SEVERE driving phobia came on, out of the blue, just over 2 years ago (after driving fine for many years). Bridges, overpasses, elevated areas, and sharp curves caused me the most problems. After the first few months of trying without any success I just gave up. I lost all my freedom and felt completely worthless and useless. After two years of feeling like a prisoner in my own home I decided enough was enough and started searching for help. I sure wasted a whole LOT of time and money along the way but I finally landed here on this book. Hope whoever is reading this review has found it early in your search because this it's really all you need if you have a strong will to succeed.

I couldn't drive anywhere really. The horrific and paralyzing fear was just too great. I purchased this book two months ago and started practicing immediately after hurriedly (but thoroughly) reading it all the way through and following his suggestions to the letter. Now here I am, two months later, about to take off on a 500 mile trip to see my daughter and I’m completely calm and confident.
YOU CAN DO THIS!! It will NOT be easy, no, not at all but please KNOW you can! When that day of freedom finally comes you will be beyond glad, you will be and feel many wonderful things.

Important Note: I temporarily developed generalized anxiety while practicing as my nerves were raw. Not realizing what was going on I thought something horrible must be wrong with me and I nearly quit shortly after I started. I later learned about being extremely sensitized, that it was normal in the first few weeks, and that it would pass. I really didn’t believe it would pass but it did. I used the techniques from Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Claire Weekes to get through the generalized anxiety while practicing to overcome the driving phobia. I highly recommend you have it in your arsenal before starting out on your road to recovery and freedom. It’s very old school. You just have to chuckle and look past that. She did mention using medication but you don’t need it. If you’re like me, you think you need it, you think it’s the only answer, but it’s not and it would be another thing you would have to work through later so why do that to yourself. So thankful I didn’t.

My first recommendation to anyone suffering with panic disorder/attacks/anxiety

This book single-handedly got me on my road to recovering from Panic disorder (Couldn't leave the house, couldn't be alone, couldn't drive alone, especially highways or far from home, etc.)

As a man, you feel castrated when hit with Panic disorder. All the things you used to do, used to love to do, and still want to do (like going for a hike, camping, taking a day-drive to the beach, driving to the country, even going to the store!) felt impossible for me. It was extremely saddening and depressing. Then, I got this book.

This book helped me just as much as therapy did. I only wanted to take medicine/anti-depressants as a last resort; and I never had to.

I can now drive on my own no problem and simply function! I don't wake up every day being reminded what I can't do. I haven't flown alone yet since this happened, but the idea doesn't scare me nearly as much as when I started. I am completely over "being alone", can drive with zero problem, even far from home, take elevators (with other people... I just hate those things ha), and feel virtually "cured." "Cure" is a bad word for anxiety sufferers, but I'll just say, I trust myself to handle panic attacks in the future. I can get through them, I always have. Future me is always ready for them.

Watching the authors videos on his website helped put a face to the words in the book, which as the other reviewers noted feels like he's sitting right next to you. I was literally saying "holy crap" every other page in this book at how exact he was describing what I was going through.

Combine this book with therapy, just so you have some accountability on what thoughts you're internalizing without realizing it, EXERCISE, and taking some vitamins, and you will be very surprised.

Simply life-changing...THANK YOU to the author!!!!!

I have never written a review for Amazon, though I have been a customer for years. This book has made me break my silence. It has transformed my life, seemingly overnight. I began having panic attacks about 3 months ago and they had reached the point of becoming debilitating. I was avoiding elevators, planes, crowds, even the grocery store. My husband wanted to take me on a (flying) trip to NYC, and I thought I would pass out at the thought of it. I sought a counselor specializing in panic disorder, and she felt sure that I could "self treat" my panic. So I sought out this book. I had barely finished this book when our NYC trip was upon us. The night before the trip I nearly backed out. The anticipatory anxiety was a nightmare. But I put full faith in the principles of this book, barely slept, and rose to get ready for our 6 am flight. I could not eat, I could barely talk, I was so anxious...until the plane took off. Then it was gone. It was like a miracle. I am still in shock at how simple it is to face down a Goliath like panic disorder and win. The trip to NYC, full of elevators, subway rides, and crowds, was actually...yes, FUN! I felt like a new woman, empowered to take back my life. Now when an airplane flies over, instead of saying to myself," I'm glad I'm not on that", I smile, and say to myself," Wow, I wonder what adventure they're off to?!". GET GET GET this book if you have ANY issue with panic attacks, claustrophobia, flying, public speaking, etc. It has been the best money I have ever spent on Amazon, hands down.

Excellent, Long-Needed Book for People Interested in KDB+

This book is outstanding.

KDB+ is a very powerful system, but newcomers can be intimidated by two things: its steep learning curve and the seeming lack of organized introductory material. When I was learning KDB, I considered two resources to be indispensable: First Derivatives "KDB+ Reference Manual" and Boror's "Q for Mortals." Psaris' new text is a VERY welcome addition to that collection.

Psaris' book will gently start you with the basics, and then lead you into more powerful examples. The book is very well organized, and I especially enjoyed his explanations as to the rationale as to why KDB does things the way it does. KDB's error messages ("`type"?) can be cryptic, but Psaris' book helped my understanding quite a bit.

I bought a copy for myself, but I also bought a copy for my colleague because this book is a godsend for people new to Q. If you're in the same position I was in - experienced in C/C++/Java (but not in any array programming languages); some development/DBA experience in Oracle or MySQL and you think KDB will be more of that same (it most certainly will not); and you have to learn KDB+ - this book will help you immensely.

I found it very hard to learn KDB and Q purely from the wiki as the provided tutorials focus on low level language details and not how to approach or structure a project.

If you are serious about learning KDB, "Q Tips" will be a worthwhile investment.

The Rest is Noise, a Companion

Simply put this may be the best survey of 20th Century music I have read. It is lucid, colorful and certainly entertaining. I read Ross in the New Yorker so I was all the more surprised and delighted to find him more expansive and colorful than that which appears in his column. Here he takes time (and space) to introduce and transit one from one section to another, as does Sibelius in my opinion.

Ross disclosed no composer whose name was unfamiliar to me until he got into Ligeti et al. My mind is open but alas my ears are not.

I am not a musician so I cannot comment on his detailed musical analysis of the various pieces in which he explored technical matters; I simply skipped those. I read all else to my great pleasure. He never fails to add to my knowledge and therefor enjoyment of music I listen to.

Highly recommended with one caveat: He gives to short shrift to most 20th century British composers of the pre and immediate post WWII era. Britten may be all fine and good for some, I am not one of those. Ross' virtually passing over RVW is shocking and more than annoying to me.

Still, it is his book. I feel I can comment on what he offers us. I don't feel I can criticize that which he doesn't offer.

My nose grows longer: He passed Elgar as though he never lived. I am not fond of him but he is not to be ignored.

All the rest is noise

I love Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, even Mahler. But anything beyond that, well, to me it has been just noise. However, Alex Ross's book has helped me to listen in a different way. It takes a long time to work through this book because when Ross talks about this or that composer, this or that piece, I have to stop and find the music (usually at my public library) and listen several times to get what Ross is saying, and then I can listen with more insight (insound?). The historical background is fascinating. The political control in music (e.g., Stalin's effect on Russian composers)is an important part of this book. The subtitle highlights Ross's emphasis on how music tells us something about history. I now understand better the physics of sound and the physical effect that music has on the listener. Ross has a list of recommended recordings which I turn to from time to time. I still do not get Messiaen! This books points the reader in many new directions, opens the reader to other options. It's a great read!

A fascinating and well-written guide to what on earth these guys thought they were doing. Cries out for interactivity; if only you could hear excerpts as they were described. Ross' ability to put his subjective experiences of these musics into words gives an inkling, to those of us who like tunes, what else might be listened for when tunes are banished.

More bang for your buck

I speak three languages and decided to learn Japanese with a friend but wanted to find a good system that wasn't boring but wasn't watered down with just tourist phrases and musical games. This system fits the bill.

First, it comes with three books (one for basic, one for intermediate and one for advanced) for learning how to speak Japanese and an additional book for learning how to write Kana and basic Kanji. It comes with nine CD's (three for each level) and the books are well bound, well organized and are far superior to other language products that Living Language has put out in the past. The fact that one can buy this for $31.00 on Amazon (the product is usually $49.99) is a steal in and of itself.

I have examined the reviews for their other language editions in this format (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, English and Chinese) and all have had good reviews. I am hoping they put out a Russian edition sometime soon.

Having had twenty years of foreign language experience, I can say that this program is the best in that it can help a student regardless of the level of proficiency they want to attain. If someone wants to learn just a few phrases and perhaps more I would recommend this course. If someone wants to become fluent, I recommend this course because it will get you a lot father than Rosetta Stone and for a fraction of the cost.

This course however will not make you fluent (no language course can, only experience can do that) and you will not learn all the Kanji that a native Japanese speakers learns (I would get a good Kanji dictionary for that) but you will learn a lot of vocabulary.

Two pieces of advice: (1) Don't just listen to the CD's. Do all the exercises and write in Romanji as well as Kana. (2) Use a black or blue BIC pen when you write in the book. The paper is thin and a heavy black or blue pen will bleed right through. A regular BIC pen won't do that.

Great Basic Course

Studying languages is one of my many hobbies, and because of this, I own quite a library of language-learning materials. Based on prior purchases, I can say that the amount of information in this course is MORE than worth what I paid for it. With that said, I will offer some clarifications on this "Complete" edition, some things I liked about it, and some things to consider about this course if you've been told to avoid this Living Language course because it does not teach Japanese the "CORRECT" way. (???) (Yes, I was warned by a friend not to purchase it for that reason... and guess what?) :)

If you're wondering if you will be "fluent" after you master this Complete Edition, the answer is ...No. Would you have a good, working, practical ability to survive, express yourself and socialize by speaking some decent Japanese? Yes. There are some who have questioned the term "Advanced" as it relates to the material in this course. After looking through the materials, I think it's more helpful to think of the levels of this course (Beginner through Advanced) as Basic, Intermediate Basic, and Advanced Basic. This, to me, seems more accurate.

One thing I look for in language courses (and hardly ever find) is some indication, or measure, of skill mastery (ie., If I master all of the materials in this course, exactly WHAT will I be able to do with what I've learned... What kinds of things will I be able to actually say?) This course, has sections throughout called ""How did you do?", which state "By now you should be able to: ....." and gives several language skills you will have gained IF you've mastered the material in that section (such as "use counters to count different types of objects around the house", or "use the verb 'Become'). Also, at the beginning of each section you get a list of language skills you'll be taught in that section. I hardly EVER see specific "lesson-plan"-type structures like these in language courses, so this was a big plus for me.

Now for the 'Correct" way to learn Japanese. I'm not a "Japanese Snob" (Purist) who believes that one should be proficient in Hiragana, Katakana and at least a few hundred Kanji before even attempting put together a single sentence in Japanes. (My friend who warned me against this course is such a 'purist', and we have gone rounds on this issue). Here is MY view on this. Language is about "Communication". If I'm dropped down in the middle of Kyoto, I'd much rather be able to ask where the nearest restroom is or ask some locals to join me for a drink (Survive and Socialize), than to be proficient in Kana stroke order. YES, OF COURSE, it's nice to know it all... but for those who would knock this course because it doesn't ever wean the student entirely off of Romaji (or English, for that matter), I say, "Give the course a break". For a 'Basic" course which gives a good grounding in Beginning Japanese, I think this course is more than acceptable. I'm not really knocking you "purists' out there..(except my friend, who is just plain annoying).. just reminding you that there are others who learn and progress differently than you do.

Note: It WOULD be nice to see Living Language produce a more advanced "Complete" course (Intermediate through Advanced Intermediate). I'd add it to my collection without hesitation.

All in all, this is a GREAT value for the money; is a good introduction to Hiragana, Katakana and a few Kanji; gives a good 'measurable' introduction to Basic, Intermediate Basic and Advanced Basic Japanese; and should give you enough practical knowledge to survive and socialize.

A true bargain

I was very surprised when I opened the box containing the course. It contained 4 books (1 one of them dealing exclusively with writing Japanese) and 9 cd's. From what I could see, everything progresses in a logical way, just like in a classroom. The quality of the books and cd's itself also surprised me. I could see that if you study this whole course, you could probably have normal conversations in japanese and read pretty much what you would encounter on a daily basis in Japan. All this for not even $40? Amazing. Even if it didn't work for you (the main problem with language courses, what works for me maybe doesn't work for you), you don't waste hundreds of dollars. After going through some other courses for a while, I feel comfortable with this one. Maybe because it goes step by step, instaead of just "throwing you in", like Pimsleur, etc....Anyway, this is my opinion.
