Book 2 - Even Better!

This is book two of the series, and like book one, this story kept me turning the pages until late in the night!

Pride is a teen whose time has really come. Once a slave to an evil druglord, she's come back to rescue her people, werewolves that can change and control their wolves, and who are used as weapons by a man who only seeks to break them. She doesn't come back alone, but it is Pride that has to make the hard choices and really pull off the rescue, even if she brought the powerful boy with her who has won her heart. She is also returning to another boy - one she once thought of as an enemy. Now she's not so sure anymore.

In a world where it is hard to know who to trust, Pride must first learn to trust herself and believe in herself. I think that was the part of the story that touched me the most - who hasn't had to look for strength from within during our teen years? Pride is smart, and strong. And now that she knows it, she's out to shove it down the Master's throat. Loved it!!

Even the best laid plans go awry...

This is a fantastic read!
Pride is back with a vengeance and the detail to her plan to free her friends makes us believe, as readers, that she will succeed - after all she's thought everything through, right?
With the pride of youth and the belief that good will prevail Cat Kalen throws us into the Master's world. How is it possible that Pride could believe she would win?
Twists and turns at every chapter along with a great description of the battle Pride has inside seeing her former friends still imprisoned and tortured. Pride has walked into a new world - what will happen to this strong alpha female character? What will happen with her mate Logan and her relationship with Stone?
The detail on how the fortress is set up lets us all know that Pride's plan to escape is a young as she is and perhaps she hasn't learned enough in her freedom.

The second installment in the A Wolf's Pride series continues to build upon the raw animal instincts and amazing characters from the first book while adding new elements that really take this story to the next level. The love triangle between Pride, Stone and Logan grows more complex and has many similarities with the one found in the Nightshade trilogy. In Pride Unleashed, shocking truths are unveiled, sacrifices are made, and battle lines are drawn. I enjoyed this book slightly less than Pride's Run because all of the action unfolds in the compound instead of in the outside world which somewhat limited the wolfish goodness but still a solid installment.

I admire Pride's spunk and determination; after having escaped a life in captivity she still finds the courage to go back and confront her master in the hopes of freeing her pack mates. When others would have run for the hills and never looked back, this werewolf goes head to head with her biggest fears. Even though her original plan backfires she doesn't lose heart but instead concocts a new and improved one. This seventeen year old girl puts most adults to shame with her strength and refusal to give up. Young adult authors should take notes; this is how teenage heroines should be portrayed instead of the typical ditzy story lines. Kalen's descriptive writing style really brings her characters to life. I can't imagine that it's easy writing an entire book that's based out of a single location while still keeping the plot interesting but Cat not only pulls it off but kills it!

The battle of wills between the two alpha males is intense and all consuming; both have good qualities but I still haven't picked a favorite. In Pride's Run, Logan was the clear winner. He taught Pride how to use her small size to her advantage and that her human half is just as much a part of her as her wolf. I wish that Kalen would have explored Stone's past a little bit more in this installment. I know there's "something" about him and it's obvious that he cares deeply for the shewolf but without more to go on it's hard to pick a team. I found many similarities between these two alphas and Ren/Shay from the Nightshade trilogy. I absolutely loved this series so it's no surprise that I'm quickly falling for A Wolf's Pride too. I'm leaning toward Stone at the moment but that could very well change with the next installment.

Pride Unleashed is exquisitely written, the action is fierce and I'm crazy about Cat Kalen's werewolves! Good things come in threes and this trilogy is scheduled to wrap-up in the winter of 2012 with Pride's Pursuit.

So much has been achieved and discussed in the materials and design domain in the last decade; some of which has found its place in design practice and design education, whilst soem has yet to come to the fore and remains at a level of noteworthy points to be considered for the future of our societies and material possessions. This book presents a panorama of completed works and on-going discussions that are shaping, or are predicted to shape, our materiality, the selection of materials for products, and our understanding and appreciation of product materials. Presently we are witnessing the birth of a new body of knowledge termed 'materials experience', which systematically explores not only how people react to the varied physical material properties of things, but also to the diverse expertise that designers must possess if they are to positively influence people's material reactions.

About the Author
Dr. Karana is currently assistant professor in the department of Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands and holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Design Engineering. She has presented her research at a number of international conferences and has run various workshops on the ‘meanings of materials’. Dr. Karana is one of the founders of the Natural Fibre Composites (NFC) Design Platform in The Netherlands. Her current research and education interests include teaching materials in design and designing and manufacturing with bio-based materials. She is the developer and the coordinator of the Materials Library: Made Of.. at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft.

Dr. Pedgley is associate professor of industrial design at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He teaches courses in materials and design and is actively involved in three areas of research: materials and manufacturing for industrial design, designing interactions between people and things, and methods of conducting academic research through designing artefacts. he holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Design from Loughborough University, UK.

Dr. Rognoli teaches courses in product development and materials for design within the department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano in Italy. Her current research interests include materials and design, expressivity and sensorality in materials for design, emotional design, design and neurosciences, and biomimicry.

Excellent for discussion group

These essays were a great starting point for a high school study group. It was interesting to compare and contrast prominent historical figures. Not the usual approach to studying history - we enjoyed it.

I was able to get a used paperback for just a few dollars, so cost wasn't an issue for me. I'm sure I would have been unhappy if I had paid $40 for it, though.

I somehow stumbled across this book after finding the viral video clip montage that Priestley and his coach had uploaded. I was curious about the behind-the-scenes practice that went into the project, so I picked this up.

The lessons within have tremendous utility for anyone looking to acquire a high level of skill in any discipline. I've read almost every popular book in the learning and skill acquisition field. For the uninitiated, EXPERT IN A YEAR will prove a good primer in the various techniques/approaches espoused by these texts.

It goes a step further than most, however - most of the bestsellers are merely theoretical or academic exercises, where the author either interviewed experts, pulled from research papers etc. Biographies of experts often make it seem as if the subject was preternaturally talented - or the bulk of the hard work was done when the author was a child, the discipline forced upon them by coaches/parents or the time available to them because of a lack of other obligations.

While such information is useful, for an adult looking to acquire a skill, the available resources often lack a practical component. 10,000 hours is the de facto benchmark for expert status - but even if you are a university student, with classes, practicing three hours a day, or even one, is almost an impossibility.

What Expert in a Year shows, more than anything, is the level of sacrifice and dedication required to get good at ONE THING. Most books promise the moon, and that we will quickly acquire myriad skills in weeks with little adjustment to our routine. This book shatters this myth completely, and provides reassurance to all those seeking mastery that they are not, in fact, going down the wrong path, and that it is, indeed, quite difficult and full of tremendous self-doubt/challenge. Towards the end, Priestly notes that his social life has declined significantly due to his constant entries in tournaments, and that "[table tennis] had completely taken over [his] life."

Nothing in life comes free, although many other courses and books will promise you as such. The honesty here is refreshing, and seeing a normal person pursue greatness in real-time is tremendously helpful - both practically and psychologically. Recommended for anyone interested in mastery, learning or skill acquisition.

For those interested in learning more about proper practice techniques and what it takes to develop high levels of skill, I would recommend BOUNCE by Matthew Syed (the best book on 10,000 hours and mastery I've read) and MAKE IT STICK by Peter C. Brown/Henry I. Roediger/Mark A. McDaniel. The Bulletproof Musician (blog) is also a tremendous resource for those who are interested in learning an instrument.

Honest, Interesting & Well Written - I'd highly recommend this book

A nice, genuine and genuinely interesting book. Interesting specifically for anyone who's into Table Tennis (like me) but also for anyone who's interested in learning in general, challenging oneself or just reading about other people's experiences. The book is very honest and very well written with plenty of useful references for learning methods and also, of course, resources for table tennis.

It's a bit of a page-turner too - I just bought the book a few hours ago and I'm already 50% through it (I've read more than enough to leave this review, already very impressed - it's a bargain at the price).

Honest discussion of how the author and his coach tackled the challenge of "Expert in a Year." The lessons they learned were more about themselves than about becoming a top ranked table tennis champion in a year. But the year of discipline and practice devoted to a goal paid off in many unexpected and beneficial ways. Lessons in this little book that will benefit anyone.

Core Reference for Intelligence Reform in 2001

There are other books on intelligence reform--the best being those by Bruce Berkowitz and Allan Goodman and by Loch Johnson--but this book is very special because it is written by an insider who has come to grips with the imperative for change and who is able to articulate the case for change in a way that others have not. This is arguably the single best and most elegant presentation for why our $30 billion a year intelligence industry must be turned upside down and shift resources away from secret satellite technology and toward analysis, analytic tools, and access to open sources of information.
The author very correctly focuses on the fact that intelligence is about getting useful tailored information to the policy consumer, not about secrets per se. He is perhaps the best spokesperson for the view that the old paradigm--collecting secrets at great expense about a single enemy--must be replaced by the new paradigm--making sense of vast quantities of information that is not secret and covers a diversity of constantly changing targets. He correctly focuses on the selection and intelligent analysis of information rather than the collection of isolated secrets--on making the most of open information.
The book is rich with anecdotal examples and makes a compelling case for dismantling the current intelligence stovepipes while simultaneously dismantling the culture of secrecy that prevents the sharing of useful information, not just within the Nation (e.g. with state and local law enforcement) but with coalition government and non-government allies of the moment.
The author, a past Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and a learned man with deep ties to Harvard, the Council on Foreign Relations, and RAND, concludes on a bitter-sweet note that demands Congressional and Presidential reflection. He firmly believes that both the intelligence community budget and as much intelligence analysis as possible should be made public and be in the public service. This book is highly recommended, and could-together with the the other intelligence reform books published in the past two years--reasonably be used as the starting point for a complete make-over of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Essential to Understanding Intelligence Challenges

Greg Treverton has written a much needed overview of the national intelligence process and correctly identified the challenges which face the US, in a post-9/11 world. His views of the world beyond 2010 are quite revealing and his challenges to the intelligence community to assess threats to the US are precisely focused. His views on the major intelligence entities reveal urgent modifications of structure and process, if the intelligence community is going to regain relevance with national customers. As a teacher of intelligence process, specifically as it relates to strategic warning, I believe this book is essential reading for anyone who aspires to be a true intelligence professional. This book will help even the wisest analyst understand how to maximize available sources and methods. The quest to provide the best possible intelligence is a goal which must be achieved.
