Great ideas for Overplanners!

Excellent advice for someone like me that is an "Overplanner". (I'd rather over-plan something than actually do it.) I have to admit that I had to restart the book three times and really read what he was saying. The writing is not the best and it is full of repetition, but it was worth it to finish the book to the end. I'd say it is one of those "Ah ha!" books with simple ideas you will use the rest of your life--even though you thought you were going about your life and projects the correct way. This is a book I would recommend to any person--it's not just about work, it's about how you go about your life. Excellent ideas. I would also recommend reading the David Allen "Getting Things Done" series as a companion to this book. With The Agile Way and "GTD" systems, I have achieved more this month than I have in the past year!

The beauty and power of JD's method is in simplicity

If you compare JD's methods to many others, the biggest thing that jumped out for me was the simplicity of JD's methods. His methods are so simple that really anyone can start using them today -- which means you'll start seeing incremental results fast. I also enjoyed how quickly JD gets down to business -- you won't find filler text or have to navigate several chapters first like you see in other books. Even if you take just one thing out of this book (I recommend the "Monday Vision, Daily Outcomes, and Friday Reflection" if you had to pick just one) you will see results.

So it boils down to this: Anyone can want to get results, but if you want to see them actualized then get this book.

An Excellent book and adaptation of Agile for Personal Results.

This is one of those rare books that both explains a concept well and provides an extremely actionable system to actually put the ideas in action.

Let me take a step back - 'Agile' is a framework used for product development. The goal is to develop the product iteratively, incrementally, and in a time-boxed fashion. Work gets done in 2 week sprints with 'just enough' analysis, as opposed to attempting to plan everything out up-front.

What the JD Meier does in this book is present a simple way to translate this system into a personal workflow management technique.

Here are the very basics:
-At the beginning of your week (or 'sprint') plan out your key intended outcomes. You should try to bite off only what you can fit into your timeboxed sprint (in my case I like to plan 2 weeks at a time). As you do this more, you'll get better at estimating what you can bite off. Write these key intended outcomes / goals on a list.
-At the beginning of each day, pick a couple things to work on, that map directly to your weekly (or 'sprint' goals). These should come directly from what you mapped out already.
-At the end of the week (or sprint) evaluate how you performed. Ask yourself, what you can do to improve for next time.

The system is simple. The beauty of it is that as work comes in, you can store it in a 'backlog' and feed it into your system based on priority. The author also recommends to do a monthly and yearly review with higher level goals, and recommends categorizing tasks by different areas in life (i.e. family / relationships, work, recreation, etc).

This seems very simple, and it is in a sense, but it's also very powerful because most people don't actually have the attention span to work on a goal that they set out at the beginning of the week, and evaluate how they performed.

Sprinkled around this simple concept are a number of little gems of wisdom... I'll list a few:

-Intended Outcomes over Activities - focus on your intended goal. The fact that you put in X hours does not necessarily mean that you are any closer to your intended outcome, and does not mean that you accomplished anything. Your criteria for success should always relate to whether or not your achieved your intended outcome, and not the time or effort you put into an activity.

-Rule of 3 - For any yearly, monthly, weekly, or daily goal setting, stick to working on 3 things at a time, you lose focus after any more than just 3.

-'Good Enough' over Perfection - people will often obsess over achieving perfect results (I am guilty of this) and spend more time or resources than necessary on a problem. Focus on 'Good Enough' and 'Version' your results, meaning you can always come back and improve in a Version 2 or a Version 3 of the task at hand.

-Throwing more time at something is one of the *worst* things you can do.

-Fix time and flex scope - if you have an intended outcome, get 'good enough' done in the allotted time and move onto the next thing, instead of going for perfect. Over the long run this will force you to be more efficient.

-Block time around eating / sleeping / working out.

-Results over Productivity - A lot of systems focus on being 'productive' or always using your spare capacity to work on something. Actually you DON'T want to do this. It's ok to have an hour break between appointments or commitments, the goal is always to achieve RESULTS. If you block all of your time on so as to have no spare capacity, you are almost guaranteed to be working on a lot of low value items with no spare capacity, when in reality you need to be focused on fewer high value items that will really make a difference.

This book is great. My only light criticism, is that it is probably hard to put into practice or truly 'get' the system if you haven't worked on an agile team before. It's still worth reading and re-reading certain parts a few times. I'd recommended phasing the system in, in small steps, starting with just the basics first.

As companions to this book, I'd recommend Getting Things Done, Zen to Done, and The Pomodoro Technique which all do a good job complementing each other but cover slightly different things. Of all these books, this one and Getting Things Done are probably the most essential ones to read.

Pretty good

This is a pretty good book. It showed me another view of the recovery industry. Which is my area of work, but on the skip tracing side. Definitely a good read if you're starting out in the recovery business.

Even better than I expected

Lee Burvine is a new author to me and I saw good reviews so I read it. This is a wonderful roller coaster ride, like James Bond but no super hero stuff! The writing is clear and unfogged. The heroes are real people with real lives and full personalities. I would love to meet them!
The plot is twisted enough to be fun but not so much as to lose the reader. The conspiracy is not (in my opinion ) forced as there really are people who are this messed up by their beliefs.
I would highly recommend it to the discerning lover of modern thrillers.

Cloak-and-dagger, sci-fi/tech and religious controversy all rolled into break-necked pace thriller

Were one to bring Dan Brown, Robert Ludlum and Frederik Pohl together to collaborate
on a novel, the result might well be something like The Kafir Project. With the
action centered around a television personality, two scientists at Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory and a Federal agent, Lee Burvine's plot develops with
the almost dizzying speed of an hour-long television thriller (think "24" for
example). It's not quite like any novel I've ever read - at least none that I can
recollect. When was the last time you read anything in the "thriller" genre that
included a bibliography that cites 17 scholarly books and articles ranging from
Biblical scholarship to psychology to computer science?

Given the hypersensitivity so prevelant in American society today, I suppose a
"trigger warning" is in order. Lee Burvine's novel touches on contemporary
controversies concerning history, culture and the prevailing mythologies of the
Western world. It will inevitably push buttons for some readers. That's just what a
book exploring this terrain ought to do.

Whether you're looking for a fast-paced thriller with credible characters caught up
in cloak-and-dagger intrigues, or fun sci-fi/tech story, you should find The Kafir

Project a satisfying read. As a bonus, Dr. Lawrence Krauss contributes a charming
forward to the novel that I enjoyed reading almost as much as the novel itself.

Highly recommended.

What fun!

This was a blast to read! The story dropped one right into mayhem and madness from page one and went from there with no downtime. I enjoyed the characters, and felt they were fleshed out nicely. The bits of snarkiness and humor weren't overdone, but felt real enough in the crazy situation that it worked well. It was extremely thought-provoking, along the "what if this could really happen".

Incredible _--- A must book to have

In receveing this book , It comes with a flim strip , Held it up to the light , It was from Dr. NO I must say how please I am , 15 pounds . filled every Bond movie ever made , from Dr, No to Skyfall. This book is a true must to have it may be over $100.00 , But it is well worth it . I never had or saw a book so well done .

You Must See This Book To Truly Appreciate It

You must truly see this book to appreciate it. It is massive. It is an exceptionally quality publication and profusely illustrated with an over abundance of commentary of many of the Bond crew throughout the series. It is incredible. Some of the photos, the comments and the graphics are so endearing, especially for the earlier Bond films. This is the one book that BOND fans who have been with the series for many years (at least like I have, and there are many of you) MUST have.

I really like the coverage of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. I was once told by author John Griswold (Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories) that Cubby Broccoli had been so disillusioned with many of the Bond fans who had been petitioning to get George Lazenby back, that he instructed Pinewood to empty the vaults of all non-essential documents and media pertaining to ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. It remains one of the most talked about Bonds of the series.

You get the sense that the author definitely sees Sean Connery and Roger Moore as the two actors who defined the James Bond series and this is somewhat a homage to their efforts. Don't let this book get by you. It truly is a required Bond book.

OMG! 600 pages and 15 pounds of Bond just arrived! I'm in love!

This book is amazing! It arrived in a rather plain cardboard "suitcase-style" slipcase with a plastic handle, but WOW the book itself is beautiful! I actually weighed it as soon as it came out of the shipping box because it was so heavy. It is huge - 12" x 16.5" x 2"!

There is no paper jacket, but because of the size and heft of this tome, it would probably be difficult to keep one on undamaged. The book's cover lookes like red pebble-grained snakeskin or lizard and the inside front and back cover pages are copies of a shooting schedule from "From Russia With Love". The pages are high-quality glossy paper and there seems to be something on just about every page, that's why I count 600 as opposed to the 592 stated. One page has a little plastic pocket containing a filmstrip of 12 original frames from a Dr. No. original 35mm print.

I am glad to see that all of the movies from Dr. No to Skyfall are included as well as Never Say Never Again. Other reviewers have complained that much of the book is taken from DVD special features. Well, I like having a choice to either watch the features or read them. Many photos are included that have not been released elsewhere.

I haven't looked much beyond the first few pages because this is the kind of book I love to consume a small serving at a time - to savor like a fine Port. For anyone who is a Bondophille, your Bond collection is not complete without The James Bond Archives.
