Well executed by the authors. Think about these things before purchase.

This was not an easy concept for the authors and product planners to execute. It's radically different than just assembling Legos from an instruction booklet. A lot of thought and effort went into the chain reaction concepts and resulting projects. The book layout, the security so that the parts actually arrive at the consumer, the durability of the non Lego paper components, the directions on how to fold the paper components etc, etc, etc. are thoughtfully done. I think they struck a very good balance so this would not cost an arm and a leg. Some might call it cheap (a few Lego pieces, a beautiful well laid out instruction book with nicely printed paper components) but I call it cost effective. A lot of what you're paying for here is in my opinion is the wow factor of the book and the well thought out concepts.

I supported my 7 year old grandson's effort to build the first project. My 5 year old grandson looked at what was involved and walked away I think because it looks complicated and the projects contain very few pieces. Both of them are very skilled Lego builders who pride themselves on their ability to throw lots of pieces together quickly. Does that sound familiar to you?

So... I think what motivates most young Lego builders is assembling lots of pieces quickly and having a relatively static object to play with when done. The chain reaction projects aren't that at all. They don't look like much -to an adult - when complete. They are challenging in my view mostly because of the need for precision alignment between the paper parts and the Lego motion actuators the kids assemble to create the Chain the Reaction. Once assembled and aligned, making it function can require trial and error, motivation to succeed, precision hand and eye coordination and patience. I think that doing the first project successfully might be a make or break point for this product. Failure would surely be a deterrent towards doing subsequent projects in the book so initial success seems very important at least for younger children. The greatest joy my grandson experienced (and it was great joy) was the moment the first project functioned properly for the first time after several complete and partial failures (just as his patience was wearing thin) and then joy again once the chain reaction was rehearsed and easily repeatable so as to show his parents without failure. Having achieved this first success he was excited about doing more projects. It remains to be seen what his long term interest level will be.
Yes.. This is radically different than just sticking prices together and success is not easy considering that the projects are minimalist in the total number of pieces. However I think the lessons and skills this product teaches are very important, worthwhile and noteworthy. Aside from the skills mentioned above this is also elementary physics of motion, weight, angle, momentum, etc. In summary, it appears that, assuming success along the way, the complicated chain reactions are fun for children to assemble, challenging to make fully, reliably functional and thrilling once they work for that first time. It's all good stuff!

Does not come with required pieces

The first project can be completed with included parts. The second project requires 4 2x1 bricks, 10 3x1 bricks, 6 4x1 bricks "from your collection". They say not to worry about matching colors or the fancy designs they show and yet I bet there's a good portion of kids used to following Lego instructions verbatim who will have a meltdown if they don't match.

How hard is it to find these bricks? I have an underbed storage container filled to the brim with the bricks from many, many Lego kits we've bought over the last 4 years. We don't have the bricks needed for the dominoes project.

Third project needs: 6 4x2 bricks; 6 8x2 bricks; 2 4x1 bricks, 4 2x1 bricks; 3 4x2 plates; 2 2x2 plates

Fourth project requires: 11 2x8 bricks; 1 2x8 plate; 3 2x4 bricks; 2 2x1 bricks; 3 2x3 bricks; 3 1x4 bricks; 3 2x4 plates; 1 2x3 plate; 5 1x4 plates; 3 1x6 plates

5th project requires: 1 1x4 tile (flat top); 1 slope brick that is 2x4 on bottom and slopes to 1x4 on top; 1 2x6 plate; 1 2x4 plate, 1 2x2 brick; 1 2x8 plate; 3 1x4 bricks, 4 2x8 bricks; random amount of other 1x? Bricks to build single stud wide walls to knock over

Best if You have An extensive Supply of LEGOS and Time to Gather parts

This book should have been turned into a LEGO set with all the pieces needed to complete each chain reaction. It includes everything need for the first reaction. The nine after that use mostly LEGOs from your collection. One could make each chain reaction, take it apart, then make the next. However we felt the point was to make a LEGO Rube Goldberg type reaction and wanted to keep each of the ten models together to explore the ways in which they could be combined. It was a pain gathering the pieces needed. It was interesting to learn a variety of cause and effect motions possible with LEGOs. If I would have known the work involved in gathering the pieces I likely wouldn't have bought this item. If you have a small LEGO collection, you likely won't have the pieces to keep all the reactions together. Some are basic bricks, but others are special pieces. Fun concept, could have been implemented better.

This collection of essays by Wolff ( The New Grove Bach Family , Norton, 1983) illuminates aspects of Bach's life through his music. Written over a 25-year period, the essays are documented in an extensive bibliography and have been updated with postscripts when necessary. Whenever possible, Wolff has gone directly to Bach's manuscripts to form his theses. For example, the question of the final "unfinished" fugue in the "Art of the Fugue" is resolved by notes in Bach's own hand that were revealed by infra-red photography. The book is illustrated with facsimiles, tables, and musical examples. Although it contains considerable technical material, it is largely accessible to the knowledgeable layperson and will be welcomed by serious students and performers. Essential for music libraries and a valuable addition to larger serious music collections.

Seriously interested in Bach's Life & Music?

Then read this book. Christoph Wolff is one of the - if not THE -
foremost Bach scholars alive today. His earlier Biography of J.S. Bach is
one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and readable presentations of
the great Master's Life. Now this book of Essays collects shorter articles and speeches
Wolff has given over the years, exploring a wide variety of subjects having
to do with Bach's music, primarily, as illuminated by recent historical
findings and analysis of his music.For instance:
1)did Bach really leave his Art of the Fugue unfinished, or did he actually
complete it?
2)What do Bach's own markings on his personal copies of several of his
works tell us?
3)How did he adapt an aria from one of the cantatas to have it function as the
Agnus Dei in the Mass in B Minor?
4) Who tacked the chorale onto the end of the Art of the Fugue, and why?
5) What does the structure and import of his Musical Offering really imply
as a message to Frederick the Great, to whom it was dedicated?

Of more interest to the serious musician, who wants to understand in
greater depth the art of arguably the greatest composer in the Western
World, than to the casually interested reader,
this book is a must for any serious lovers and devotees of his music.

A Source of Amusement and Inspiration for a Young Girl

My parents purchased this 1972 Wonder Woman compilation to feed my childhood enthusiasm for the Amazing Amazon. I was but 8 yrs old in 1975 when the highly popular WW TV show starring Lynda Carter debuted, and, like many little girls, I found Princess Diana to be an inspiration. Those were the days before graphic novels, so old episodes of the WW comic were not available to the average reader. This compilation includes a selection of full color issues originally published from 1941 to 1946, written by WW's creator William Moulton Marston (under the pen name Charles Moulton). Marston believed in WW's mission, expecting girls to be the main readers.

There is an introduction and prefaces to each section by Gloria Steinem, and an essay by Phyllis Chesler. The book is divided into 4 sections: Origins, Sisterhood, Politics, and Romance. The 1940s cars, clothes and situations were a curiosity to 70s girls, and are just as much so now, but the themes presented are timeless. My own 11yr boy old loves the book, both for the quaintness, the stories, and the funny dialog. (The most memorable line is uttered by Etta Candy - "No more jalopy rides for me! Next time I go west it's Pullman all the way!" Much to our delight, we just toured a few vintage Pullman cars last week when he was working on his Boy Scout railroading badge.)

Stories include, among others: the mystery of a new Holiday College girl who dresses and acts straight from the late 1800s; Nazi plots to beat America; counterfeiters; the interference of Mars, the god of war; and a woman hater who sets the Holiday girls to `impossible' tasks to earn money for the college. Dr. Psycho makes an appearance. My favorite story still resounds today - ""When Treachery Wore a Green Shirt." In this story, a man named Frenzi (yes, Frenzi) makes money off gullible fools by inflaming anti-immigrant passions, even though he doesn't really subscribe to the beliefs himself. Diana gives an impassioned speech at the end about the having the strength to admit one's mistakes and to love one another. Common themes incluse the power of love, patriotism, working to help others, and believing in yourself.

This book is as enjoyable today as it was way back.

role model for girls in the 1940's

The importance of Wonder Woman for girls in the 1940's and 50's and on can't be overstated. She was the ONLY role model that showed a strong, amazingly capable woman and underlined that girls/women can be anything they wanted to be if they believed they could be. I was born in 1936 and from about the age of 9 or 10 my best friend (Diane) and I would wait eagerly for each new issue of Wonder Woman and we would read and re-read and act out. Steinem had this book published because she knew the importance of Wonder Woman and this book passes the message and imagery on to girls even today. Give this book to young girls, you can't give them a better gift than the message of strength, independence and capability.

Black and White Reprint of Selected Early Wonder Woman Stories

Wonder Woman is a 1978 paperback book republishing of 6 stories from the DC's Wonder Woman comics of the 1950s. While it offers a delightful glimpse into the original Golden Age comics, the paperback lacks the color graphics and full size of the originals. Five of the six stories represented in this volume were copyrighted between 1953 and 1955.

The first story, "Wonder Woman's Lasso," is dated 1942 and was written by Charles Moulton with art by Harry G. Peter. It tells the story of how Wonder Woman won her unbreakable magic lasso with mind-controlling powers. Written prior to the 1954 Comic Book Code, it contains lots of depictions of scantily clad women in various forms of bondage. In addition to winning her lasso, Wonder Woman saves the chief of American intelligence from a Nazi plot which includes an invisible ray and a cruel baroness.

"The Bird Who Revealed Wonder Woman's Identity," the second story, is about a talkative pet mynah bird that causes some awkward moments for Diana Prince when it reveals her secret identity.

In the third story, "Wonder Woman's Wedding Day" is ruined when Prof. Uxo's time dimension transfer machine turns her into an invisible wraith. Using only the power of suggestion, she convinces the evil scientist to return her to normal.

In "The Secret Invasion," Orlusians from the planet Orbus use mind control to confuse Wonder Woman while they plan their attack of Earth. Fortunately, she is able to use brute force to combat their nefarious scheme.

The last stories in the book are origin stories for two of her fascinating weapons. In "The Talking Tiara" Wonder Woman fights a Tyranosaurus, a Roc and a giant Octopus to win the right to wear the Linguagraph Tiara which allows her to understand and speak any language past, present or future.

"The Origin of the Amazon Plane" is the final entry in this collection. When she finds the plane it is in three parts protected by a giant underwater carniverous plant, an electrified tree, and a fiery volcano. She must defeat these three obstacles to put the plane together and use it to combat evil.

Interestingly, she uses her Amazon Plane in the first story to go to Paradise Island to get her famous lasso, then in this last story she uses her lasso to overcome the volcano and retrieve the last part of her plane. So it becomes an amazing chicken and egg paradox as to which came first, unless there were two Amazon Planes. The first 1942 plane is shown with a propeller, while the plane in the last story, written in 1955, has no propeller.

These stories provide a wonderful glimpse into the origins of a 20th century icon. They also provide a contrast between pre- and post-Comic Code depictions of the same super hero. If you can live without the color graphics, this is a good introduction to Wonder Woman.

When children are in distress or at risk in their homes, social service agencies may institute a number of measures. The most drastic entails removing such children from their homes and placing them in foster care. But placement often fails. Many children, some with severe and long-standing psychological, social, and educational handicaps, simply leave one unstable environment for another. In many cases, things just get worse.

Paul Steinhauer, a child psychiatrist at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, argues that foster placement has suffered from a lack of proven or generally acceptable models of intervention. It has further been impeded by decreases in the funding of social services and by ambivalence, on the part of both society and the mental health professions, towards the child welfare system. These factors have combined to produce a high failure rate, decreasing morale, and widespread disillusionment and burn-out in both foster parents and child welfare workers.

In this book Steinhauer brings together the fragmented research that has been done in a number of different disciplines. From this body of work he develops a model of intervention based on an understanding of attachment theory, development theory, and the practice of mental health consultation. The model provides a basis for pragmatic decision making and step-by-step guidelines for implementation of many of its components.

Steinhauer provides an important tool in the struggle to protect society's most vulnerable population.
