About the Author

Elizabeth Cowne has been actively involved in developing and delivering SENCo training for 30 years, largely associated with the outreach courses at the Institute of Education. She was the sole author of the first five editions of the SENCo handbooks and is author of many other publications.

Carol Frankl is Managing Director of the Southover Partnership, an independent special school and support service. She is also a tutor on the National Award for SEN Co-ordination course. Carol regularly contributes to SEN publications.

Liz Gerschel has been training SENCos, teachers, teaching assistants and governors for more than 30 years. Liz helped to develop, and currently teaches, the NASENCO course for the Institute of Education at University College London. She was a Learning Difficulties Outreach Tutor at the University of Birmingham for many years and has published on SEN, governance and equalities.

JAMES BAO-YEN TSUI, PhD, is an electronics engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He has extensive experience in GPS receiver design for both civilian and military applications and is the author of Microwave Receivers with Electronic Warfare Applications.

Good at explaining the basics of GPS, VERY poor reference for actually building a software receiver

This book does a good job at explaining the fundamentals of GPS operation. It breaks things down to an understandable level and presents most material well. However, it is not thorough enough to be used to design a software receiver. The book covers Costas loops and DLL's in a very cursory manner. It is also filled with typos and other errors. If your actually attempting to build a software receiver, try some of these books: "Understanding GPS Principles and Applications" by Elliot Kaplan (Ed.), "Global Positioning System: Theory and Applications Volume 1" by B. W. Parkinson and J. J. Spilker (Ed.'s), "Global Positioning System: Signals Measurements and Performance" by P. Misra and Per Enge. These books are far more detailed and are relatively free of errors.

Wait for a revised 2nd edition

Lets face it, there are plenty of GPS textbooks on the market that satisfy all levels of inquiry.
My first criticism of the book is that the first six chapters are well covered in most of the standard texts. I believe that the primary reason someone would want to purchase this book is for the last few chapters, (particularly chapter 9 which discusses GPS software receivers), as well as for the accompanying Matlab source code in the textbook. (At least that was my reason).
My second criticism is that this book desperately needs an editor. There are a tremendous number of grammatical errors and spelling errors that I found incredibly distracting from the contents of the book. In addition, many of the illustrative plots used in the text have no units specified for the axes, and little description of the figures is given in the body of the text.
Finally, the code that is included at the end of each chapter is poorly organized and poorly documented. There are very few comments in the various code sections and the author insists on using terribly ambiguous variable names. All of which could be forgiven if the Matlab code provided actually worked!! Many of the routines in the all-important 9th chapter on GPS software receivers call user-defined functions that are not actually defined anywhere in the textbook! In an attempt to be proactive, I emailed the author and asked for a copy of the missing Matlab code and was told that the codes are not available for download.
Disappointing indeed! (I think that an accompanying CD with a snippet of IF data and a set of working Matlab codes would be a wonderful addition to a 2nd edition of the book.)
For what its worth, I think the approach taken in the textbook is great, but until a revised 2nd edition of the textbook is produced I would recommend that you save your money.

About the Author
Tom Holmes, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University, where he was awarded the State of Michigan Teaching Excellence Award. He has been training graduate students in psychotherapy since 1985 and since 1996 he has been teaching in the Holistic Health Care Program. His specialty area is spirituality and the therapeutic process. Tom received training in Internal Family System therapy from Richard Schwartz in the late 1980 s and has been teaching, training and practicing IFS since that time. In recent years his focus has been on burnout prevention: Healing the Healer and Tuning the Heart of the Healer. His workshops integrate Western psychology with Buddhist psychology and the Sufi path of the heart as well as spiritual teachings from Christianity, Judaism, and Taoism. He specializes in integrating spirituality with internal system therapy.

Parts Work, great introduction

This book was recommended to me after I had expressed interest in the Internal Family System work. It is indeed really worthwhile to read and reread it, because it contains so much information presented in an easily understandable way.
The one quibble I have with this book compared to Jay Earley's Self-therapy is that Holmes keeps repeating that it is difficult and/or impossible to work on your own with this system while Earley obviously takes the position that it is very well possible to do this work on your own or with a buddy, not necessarily with an IFS therapist if the situation isn't too dramatic.
Personally I am not really fond of Sharon Eckstein's drawing style, but the illustrations support the text in a wonderful way nevertheless.
Reading Holmes and Earley both together gave me an even broader introduction to this wonderful parts work. It is my intention to keep studying in this direction.

Great therapy model

Great Book, the Interfamily Systems (IFS) therapy model made an incredible change in my life, and I continue to evolve.

Like with any therapy though, it's best applied if you are concurrently in actual therapy with a counselor. But you can still make amazing things happen in your life with just the book. Just make sure you practice what it tells you!

She reminds readers that we are showered every day with gifts, but they are not meant for us to keep... Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, a scientist, a decorated professor, and an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. A SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, she lives in Fabius, NY.

I can't recommend this book more highly

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

This is not the "type of book" I would typically read, or thought I would enjoy. (I gravitate toward science, and abhor "storytelling). Nevertheless, this book was so highly recommended that I gave it a try. After only a few pages, I realized what a gift had so fortuitously come into my life. I fear I cannot adequately describe its profound essence -- part science, part wisdom, part communicator of the mysteries of animate "objects." All I can say is: read it and experience the magic for yourself. Thank you to all who took the trouble to recommend this book to me. I feel blessed and enriched for having read it.

a breath of sweet grass

Beautifully written, as evocative as a deep drought from a forest stream. Kimmer braids together the wisdom learned directly from trees with that learned from the books printed on them. Reading this book is like coming home to where we've always been--nestled in the heart of the Earth that cherishes us, even when we forget that.

I would give it 10 stars if I could.

A tragic country

For those who are interested in Africa's past and future this is a must read book. Clearly written and well organized you sail through the history of a country that was establish as such by a powerful man, Leopold II who never went there. Congo,ex Zaire catches the reader's full attention from beginning to end. And keeps you wondering what will happen next

About the Author
Tim Blight fell in love with Pakistan on his first visit in 2006. Since then it has been a roller-coaster ride of perilous mountain roads, getting caught up in religious processions in crowded streets, learning a lesson about the effects of eating spicy street food, standing awestruck by beautiful architecture and meeting more than a few friends for life. Since his first visit, Tim has visited Pakistan seven times, criss-crossing the country and visiting almost every (accessible) corner of the land. He is the author of Pakistan Traveller, a project of his website UrbanDuniya.

A very well written, comprehensive and informative book. It opened my eyes to my misconceptions of Pakistan. Looking at some of the author's photos, it was hard to believe that they were in Pakistan. Stunning scenery and some exotic looking places. Will use this for a planned trip next year.
