Not a Book for the Weak of Heart

Servant-Leadership is rapidly becoming a popularized term and a popular concept to bandy about in many circles.

This is the book that started that trend.

Published originally in 1977, it contains articles and concepts that found their germination in the turbulant decade of the 1960's. While you might imagine from the term "Servant-Leader" that the ideology of this book stems from religious conviction and it certainly does include that, you may be surprised to read in the first chapter of the book that it finds its inspiration in literature. Specifically, the Servant-Leader who captured Greenleaf's imagination and catalyzed the writing of this book was the fictional character Leo in Herman Hesse's "Journey to the East."

More surprises remain in store throughout this book that challenges concepts seemingly ingrained in human nature and counter-intuitively argues for several revolutionary premises, not simply on the basis of morality, but rather effectiveness and societal need.

In particular, Greenleaf argues that the advent of big business, large institutions, and corporate growth requires a paradigm shift in the view of leadership. Contrary to the anti-authoritarianism so ingrained in the 60's, Greenleaf argues that large organizations hold tremendous promise to accomplish correspondingly large results. What is needed are leaders who will embrace the organizations and see them almost as separate entities, living organisms as it were, love them, care for them and serve the population within and without through them.

The qualities that Greenleaf profers as indicative of such growth and service are:

1. Do those served grow as persons?

2. Do they, while being served become healthier wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?

3. What is the effect on the least privileged in society?

4. Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived? (Greenleaf 1977/2002 p.27)

In practical terms Greenleaf argues strongly for such Servant-Leaders to rise up and shake off the traditional trappings of leadership within archaic and dusty organizations and equally archaic leadership models, where the emphasis has been upon elevating managers to de facto leaders of these institutions and instead, elevating Trustee's and Board Chairpersons to reject passivity, reject the role of a rubber stamp and exert leadership that embraces values, takes risks and empowers people.

It is a clarion call to activist leadership that feels very much a derivitive of the 60's altruism, yet rejects the across the board discarding of all institutions as irretrievably corrupt and inherently in need of dismantling.

The influence of this concept and the leadership institutions that are adopting the model in their training and operations is remarkably going beyond its author who passed away in 1990.

This book should be a welcome addition to the leadership library of every student and participant in the leadership melieu. Whether you accept and adopt the premises contained, there is wisdom and insight for all who wish to read. Answers in some context are given, but more importantly, tools are provided with which to frame the question for those moving forward.

I highly recommend this book as an indispensible tool for understanding the leadership issues and needs of this generation.

An important contribution to our field

As an analyst for a large manufacturing company's ERP implementation, I was responsible for a very complex and critical area called Classifications. Classifications was the place where all products, vendors, or customers were grouped into buckets based on similar behavior. For example, if this company manufactured vehicles, there could be classifications for hybrids, sports cars, SUVs, minivans, etc. To better understand classifications, I dived into screens, help files, and actual database tables and after several weeks, completed a classifications data model. The model I produced was very similar to the data model that appears on page 224 of "The Data Model Resource Book Volume 3: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling" by Len Silverston and Paul Agnew.

This book contains a collection of patterns, which are general building blocks that could be used as the basis for just about any type of data modeling within any industry. Classifications is one example, and there are a collection of others such as roles, statuses, and contact mechanisms. Whereas Volumes 1 and 2 in The Data Model Resource Book series contained models for common business processes or industries, this volume contains patterns that cross through all processes and industries. Consistent with the series however, the purpose of this text is to save the modeler time so instead of starting from scratch, the modeler can start from a reliable and proven foundation. Realizing these patterns exist and making them work for your particular modeling assignment can result in a higher quality data model and a greater level of consistency within your organization.

A majority of the book is dedicated to chapters which describe how to model a pattern at different levels of generalization. Level 1 is the most concrete and this is where terms and rules a business analyst are familiar with are shown, such as email address and telephone number. Level 2 through 4 go through increasingly more generized levels with Level 4 being the most generalized. The Classifications example I encountered in the ERP package for example was a Level 3 model, very generalized so that it can be leveraged by any industry. The book makes an important point that there are situations where one level is more appropriate than another, and sometimes the modeler must trade the familiarity and business rule enforcement of a Level 1 with the flexibility available in a Level 2, 3, or 4. For example, a phone number and email address from a Level 1 model would be generalized into contact mechanism data in a Level 2 model. This extra flexibility allows for accommodating other ways of contacting someone that may not have been specified (for example, via a person's "voice over IP" or Skype number). The book also makes the point that sometimes on a single model you can combine different levels for the same requirement (i.e. a hybrid approach).

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a universal pattern as well as the terms and symbols used throughout the book. The goals for the book are also clearly articulated, in addition to the intended audience and a summary of each chapter. There is a wonderful furniture analogy used to distinguish a universal data model from a universal pattern. Universal data models (the subject of the first two volumes of The Data Model Resource Book), are similar to already constructed standard tables and chairs. The consumer can obtain this furniture instead of build the tables and chairs from scratch. Similarly, the modeler can reuse an inventory or claims universal data model instead of building it from scratch. Universal patterns are similar to the dovetail joints of the furniture, common pieces that exist in already built tables and chairs as well as custom furniture. Universal patterns are the building blocks such as the roles and statuses behind any modeling project.

Chapters 2 through 8 each focus on a particular pattern. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on parties and roles; Chapter 2 on declaration roles and Chapter 3 on contextual roles. A party is a person or organization of importance to the business, and declaration roles are those roles that are independent of any business event while contextual roles are dependent on a particular business event. For example Bob the person can have a declarative role of `Doctor', yet when an insurance claim is filed, they can also have the contextual role of `Primary Care Physician'. Chapter 4 focuses on similar structures for relating data including hierarchies, aggregations, and peer-to-peer relationships. Chapter 5 focuses on taxonomies and classifications, and Chapter 6 on patterns for states that business concepts go through. Chapter 7 contains patterns for getting in touch with parties, such as those patterns for modeling telephone number and email address. Chapter 8 focuses on how to model business rules including the rule itself, the factors involved in the rule, and the outcomes of the rule.

I was impressed with the consistency and comprehensiveness of each of these chapters. These chapters follow a similar format of demonstrating each of the four levels of detail. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the pattern and a discussion of its importance. Then for each of the four levels, there is a section on the reason for the level, how the pattern works (with lots of examples), when the pattern should be used, and the weaknesses of the pattern. I found the charts and tables to be extremely useful in the text, especially the Summary of Patterns table at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 9 focuses on how to apply these patterns in many types of efforts including both relational and dimensional modeling efforts and both application and enterprise areas of scope. As with the other chapters, there is a great summary at the end on the strengths and weaknesses of patterns with each type of effort. Chapter 10 adds the human dynamics side to incorporating patterns, as success or failure is heavily connected with people's perception or trust. Four principles are discussed, that will help acceptance and usage of the patterns: Understand motivations and work toward meeting them, Develop a clear, common, compelling vision, Develop trust, and Manage conflict effectively.

To summarize, under every data model is a set of common building blocks, clearly explained in "Universal Patterns for Data Modeling". I would recommend this book for every analyst, modeler, or architect who is striving for a level of information consistency within their organization. Whether you are just starting your modeling adventure or have been in the modeling for decades, you will find these patterns invaluable tools for every modeling effort.

A Comprehensive Study of Key Data Model Patterns

Unlike the world of Object Oriented programming, there are very few pattern books devoted to data modeling. This is unfortunate because most business applications suffer from over-specialization & inflexibility in the data model, where change is very expensive. The few data model patterns books that do exist do not explore the depths of subject to the extent that this book does.

Based on their many years of experience, Silverston & Agnew chose to focus on the most common areas of interest (Parties, Roles, Relationships, Statuses, Classifications, Contact Mechanisms, & Rules) and offer a set of data model pattens for each. Each area has a set of "pattern levels" ranging from specific to general, listing benefits, drawbacks, & usage guidelines for each. The modeler can choose which pattern level best suites the enterprise based on perceived needs.

This book can be thought of as the "gang of four" book for data modeling. I would recommend this book for anyone engaging in any form of data modeling. You may not use the exact patterns, but it will at least serve as a catalyst for future thought.

Two surprises I didn't like

The text of this book was generally good - although it seemed padded out with a massive listing of model metadata. The book comes with a CD. The first surprise was, the CD does not include the Data Definition Language (DDL) for its sample models... there's an extra cost for that. My question to the publisher would be, what good is the CD you provide for free?

The second surprise is the illustrations. There are plenty of them, but they look like they were done in a primitive graphics package - not in an enterprise modeling tool. They author seems to have invented his own wierd set of conventions, including "foreign keys do not appear in the entities... that is duplicate information". Before you buy this book, take a look at the illustrations of the models. If you can live with the notation, maybe consider buying it.

Appears to be good - Not for me though

I am currently studying for the ARE (Architectural Registration Examination). I bought this book in hopes to have it help me learn new things with the book it goes with. However, the book does not come with answers and me being self taught, that is pretty much a must for me so that I have the ability to verify my solutions. If you were going to school and had an instructor that could rate your solutions, I am sure that this book would be great. That is why I give it four stars; I really can't complain about it only because it wasn't meant for me. I looked at a few of the questions and instantly realized that the problems were too basic for me, but that could be because I have been in the field of Architecture for about ten years now. If only I knew that it did not come with answers and that the problems were a little more advance, I would have been more happy. This book is more for a student.

Before her death from cancer in 1994, the pioneering archeologist Marija Gimbutas had nearly completed this book, a distillation of her life's work. After decades of scholarly research that shaped much of the field of pre-Indo-European archeology (7000-3000 B.C.), Gimbutas produced two copiously illustrated, oversized books accessible to a nonscientific audience, The Language of the Goddess and The Civilization of the Goddess. This final, smaller work illuminates the continuity between scores of religious symbols from the cultural flowering of Neolithic Old Europe in the fifth millennium B.C. to European folk cultures of the modern era. The first part concisely presents Gimbutas's discoveries and observations about imagery of goddesses and gods, symbols and signs, sacred script, temples, burial practices and social structure in Old Europe before 4400 B.C., and reveals the sophisticated degree of abstraction and artistry in the expression of the Old European cyclical sense of birth, maturation, death and regeneration. The second part traces the adaptations of these Old European elements into subsequent religious systems from the late Neolithic era to our own century. As in her previous work, Gimbutas's aesthetic and spiritual sensitivity adds a depth unusual in archeological writing. Another contribution to the much-ballyhooed theory of matriarchal prehistory, by the late feminist pioneer Gimbutas (Archaeology/UCLA; Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe, not reviewed). Gimbutas built a career around her controversial claims that before Indo-European warriors invaded around 4400 b.c., ``Old Europeans'' from Ireland to Italy enjoyed an agrarian, peaceful, goddess-worshiping existence. Their aesthetic standard was higher than that of other cultures of the period, with sophisticated architecture, complex linear language, and advanced farming techniques. Their religious rituals centered on birth and regeneration, with female reproductive images occupying prominent roles. Many archaeologists have criticized Gimbutas's techniques and interpretations, noting that she reads more into the physical evidence than is supportable. Are all circles eggs, for example, and is every triangle a pubic image? At times, Gimbutas's claims, which she reiterates in this volume, nearly completed before her death in 1994, border on the ridiculous, as when she argues that the bullgenerally a symbol of patriarchal dominancewas really a woman-centered image for the Old Europeans because the bull's head and horns resemble the female uterus and Fallopian tubes. The latter half of the book moves to a discussion of social structure, with Gimbutas maintaining that Old Europeans had much greater respect for women's rights than their Indo-European successors. However, Gimbutas sometimes engages in a circuitous logic, claiming at once that women were socially respected because Old Europeans worshiped the goddess and that they worshiped the goddess because women were already regarded so highly. Also, Gimbutas conflates all Neolithic cultures into one ``Old European'' entity, missing the diversity of religion and practice among them. The book is well-written, and much credit must be given to editor Dexter (a lecturer in womens studies at UCLA), for tying together Gimbutass last works in an eloquent manner. Full of intriguing possibilities, but Gimbutas's work is too wedded to theory and ideology, rather than to archaeological evidence, to be ultimately persuasive. Old European culture has survived in its living goddesses.

For those familiar with Gimbutas's earlier works, Part I is a refresher course on how the peoples of Neolithic Europe saw the Goddess. Especially interesting are the chapters on Stonehenge and other temples and ceremonial centers of wood stone and wood throughout Britain and the continent. The book's greatest value, however, lies in Part II, which comprises chapters on the Minoan, Greek, Etruscan, Basque, Celtic, Germanic, and Baltic religions. Gimbutas and Dexter explain with precision and clarity how the civilization of early historical Europe was an amalgam containing both Old and Indo-European elements. The Old Europeans were already there, of course, working the land, building cities, creating their elegant pottery, worshipping in temples sometimes miscalled palaces or fortified settlements. The Indo-European tribes came and saw and conquered. And then they settled in. Yes, they made terrible changes, but they also intermarried and adopted, and life went on. Much remained and was transformed. Although we are, for example, perhaps most familiar with the Greek gods and goddesses, we may not be familiar with their Old European ancestors. Hekate, Artemis, Athena, and Hera survived from Old Europe. So did some of the Greek gods, including Hermes, Pan, and (amazingly) Zeus. The information on the Balts is especially interesting, for they were the last pagans in Europe and their region "represents the greatest repository of Old European beliefs and traditions." This is the paganism Marija Gimbutas experienced as a child in Lithuania. Some who espouse the "culture wars" would have us believe that Gimbutas made it all up. This book is proof that she simply reported what she found. It is a testament to her extraordinary scholarship in archaeology, folklore, history, and matrilineal culture.

An Excellent Overview of a Gifted Scholar's Life's Work

Although some reactionary reviewers would like the general public to believe that the late Marija Gimbutas, Ph.D. was a beyond-the-fringe scholar, one only has to look at the list of illustrious scholars who chose to write for the earlier Anthology celebrating her life's work to see that such a view is an insult to this extremely capable, gifted, and intelligent archaeologist and scholar. Marija Gimbutas was just ahead of her time and in conflict with the predominantly male powers that be within the Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D.; Riane Eisler, J.D.; James Harrod, Ph.D.; Carol P. Christ; Martin Huld; and Michael Dames to name just a few contributed to the Anthology volume honouring Marija's work. Kees Bolle, Ph.D. and Joseph Campbell can be numbered among Marija's admirers as well. Some reactionaries would like you to think that Marija stood alone and foolish in her ideas. However, time will tell and it seems that time and science are on Marija's side.
For those of you who have not had the privilege of an academic career or who are just starting out at University, you might not know that there are fads and fashions in academia just as there are fads and fashions in the other aspects of our lives. When I was an undergraduate, the History Dept. at my University was pretty much run by Marxist Historians. They groomed their students with their favorite concepts and practices and a generation of Marxist Historians was popped out. A few rebelled (some became reactionary, some revolutionary, and some just tried to be objective) and thus, twenty years down the line you have a change in fad and fashion and new schools of thought and modes of methodology take over in the halls of upper learning.
The same thing happens in all realms of study -- remember, all of these examinations and explanations are THEORIES! Even Marija's are theories; however, it is up the individual READER to determine which theory is logical and probable and to make their own choices. Do not surrender to the view of some self appointed arbiter of academia to tell you what is or is not of value.
Now remember, there are fads and fashions in academia. Marija's mode of theory arose from her life experiences (and just to find out a bit about the adventures of this extraordinary woman's extraordinary life is one reason to purchase "Living Goddesses") and the time in which she taught. Marija began teaching in the time of freedom and exploration that arose after W.W.II and in the Sixties. She continued teaching through the Seventies, Eighties and early Nineties. Many of her critics, however, are the products of the reactionary Reagan Era. Marija was not an ill taught or unaccredited scholar. She published twenty books and more than two hundred articles in various languages and taught at the best schools on this planet. She worked on many of the important archaeological digs of this century in many countries. She brought a new and fresh vision to the interpretation of data (which up until her time was nearly always interpreted by male scholars -- we see the world though our upbringing and this DOES matter in how scholars interpret their data). Marija Gimbutas, although she would have blushed at the praise, was a visionary genius.
I say this, even though I do not agree with all of her findings. However, there is enough in her theories to be of great interest and to make you comprehend the History of Western Civilization in a new way. A lot of what Marija theorizes makes incredible sense.
So, I say to you -- take a gamble and decide for yourself. I find that this is an extraordinary volume of work. Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D. has done a wonderful job of condensing and clarifying Marija's life work into this very accessible volume. I think that everyone can get a good grasp of what Marija's theories were, and they are a refreshing breath of crisp clean air, after the thick, mind numbing fog that we have sometimes had to deal with in the halls of academia. Scholarship is supposed to foster new ideas and ways of looking at the world. It is awful to say that I do not think that this is always the case in our society. We are a society that still overvalues conformity; however, would you have your PC at the ready or be surfing the Internet if the conformists had had their way? I think not.
"Living Goddesses" is the final, fittingly comprehensive and approachable volume of Marija's life work. Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D. has done a fantastic job of editing and finalizing the volume which must have been a Herculean task since the author was deceased. It is a gift to the minds of the world who explore, and wish to evaluate learning for themselves. It is a gift to the creative and visionary among us. I thank Marija Gimbutas, wherever she is, for gifting us with her knowledge, insight, and creativity. I also thank Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D., for a wonderful job of tying everything together in an entertaining and enlightening manner. I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of this book and decide its merits for yourself.

The Kirkus reviewer obviously did not read the book!

The evidence laid out in this series of works is very compelling. The critics of these ideas seem only able to express themselves with "Preposterous!" or "Idiotic" but never with a calm rational comparison of data and artifacts.
The Kirkus reviewer says it is "bordering on the ridiculous" to assume that the bull could have been a female symbol, that this is Gimbutas' imagination. But then there is artwork remaining from this era with clear pictures of bull skulls with horns drawn over the pelvic areas of women, with the horns positioned where the fallopian tubes would be. This murals are reproduced in the book. Had the reviewer wanted to actually check what the book presented as evidence for this assertion, he or she would have been able to find this mural. Bull skulls painted over the pelvises of women, the symbolism is hard to dismiss.
The critics of Gimbutas either don't read her work or address people who have never read her work themselves.
Seeing the anger and spite towards this body of scholarly work leaves me wondering why is there so much hatred and antagonism towards the work of Gimbutas? Why are there so many irrational and inaccurate criticisms of her body of work?
The Kirkus reviewer was sloppy -- if he or she had bothered to read the book being reviewed, then he or she would have had access to the data that supports Gimbutas' assignment of the bucranium, the head and horns of ther bull, as a uterine symbol.
What kind of fly-by-night operation is Kirkus that they allow such sloppy reviews by someone who will make an attack on a position presented in the book without actually looking at the physical evidence for this position that is decribed and presented and footnoted properly in the book itself?
I am not impressed by the critic of Gimbutas. I haven't seen a criticism that was either accurate or unemotional.

Very Comprehensive Survey of Ceramics Techniques & Materials

This is a large book chock full of information, and provides an in-depth survey of ceramics. There are many photographs about techniques and many illustrations of beautiful artistic ceramics pieces. Also it contains lots of technical information, tables, etc.

Since other reviews have covered the merits of this book quite well, I'll mention a few issues:

First, there are lots of sample photos of different clay bodies under different firings and different glaze colors and combinations, etc., but they are all *way too small* to really see the characteristics of each sample. Also sometimes there is a series of photos, e.g. throwing a pot, building a kiln, and when they are all arranged on the page, each one is too small (and many are b&w, from previous editions?) Otherwise the book is very well illustrated with a wide variety of work.

The glaze discussion does not cover the properties of glaze bases and coloring oxides much at all, which is something I would expect in a book of this comprehensiveness. It does spent some time on commercial fritted stains and Mayco glazes, which other books don't, and can be useful to some, especially for low-temp work. But if you really want to get into glazes, this is not the book.

For many advanced topics, she has just a mention that leaves me hungry for more. E.g. lusters she briefly mentions using and making, but Rhodes has a much more thorough discussion of making lusters. Paperclay is mentioned briefly but not enough to really tell me how to make it or use it. For many of the topics in the book, more detailed discussions are possible and likely available elsewhere. However she has assembled lots of brief mentions of different and experimental work that you might not encounter in other ceramics survey books, so it is useful for knowing what else I want to look into.

Content good , a worldwide view of rare and not so rare lung diseases .The physical quality of the book is another story .Newspaper paper ,binding with glue ,not sewn .Everything cheap made to maximize profit .As soon as I took it out of the package is falling apart .For a $200 book that's unacceptable .
