Must have for rescue workers and volunteers

Every rescue worker and volunteer should read this book. Camacho does a great job spelling out the common pitfalls of working with shelter dogs, and explains how to avoid those mistakes. He starts out with an explanation of dog body language, which is so commonly misunderstood, even among many professional animal caretakers. Other topics include: how to introduce yourself to a new dog, working with aggressive or fearful dogs, how to make dogs more adoptable, and finding the right homes.
Each chapter concludes with a very accessible list of key points.
Many animal shelters struggle with overpopulation, and some are woefully under-equipped to find homes for abandoned dogs. This book offers guidance for people at all levels of animal rescue, and is a must-read.

Fern is very respected in the dog rescue community and I have reached out to him with questions personally. He is personable, prompt, and professional in his replies. After rescuing a dog from euthanasia at the NYCAC&C, I wanted to do the best for her, and also realized how many shelter dogs do not get the chance they deserve to even survive. Our rescue became an amazing dog, by starting with the power of a walk, then a nice run, and now I am seeking additional advice to help other shelter dogs in the situation of not surviving, by starting with the power of a walk. This book is a great resource for anyone working in a rescue or shelter situation. The author's style is direct, conversational and easy to read with many examples for the reader to draw from. There is a wealth of information in this book that is invaluable for people working with dogs in any capacity. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone with a rescue or adopted dog in their life, potential adopters included.
